Arendse Wins South African Masters

NOLAN ARENDSE defeated Devon Petersen 9-5 in the final of the 2014 South African Masters as he secured a place in the William Hill World Darts Championship.

Cape Town's Arendse enjoyed his greatest success on the South African circuit as he came through the field to take victory in the annual South African Masters, having been a two-time quarter-finalist previously.

The Cape Town ace had defeated Brent Robertson and Shawn Hogan - a South African World Cup of Darts representative - in the latter stages of Sunday's event before defeating Petersen in the decider.

The defeat denied Petersen his fourth win in the past five years as the flamboyant thrower paid the price for missed doubles.

Petersen took the game's opening leg, but Arendse levelled and then won the next three after misses from his opponent to move 4-1 up.

Petersen pulled back to 4-3 and 5-4, but a key 106 finish nudged Arendse 6-4 up, and though the next two legs were shared, Petersen was left waiting on a finish in the next two as his rival sealed the win.

"I feels super being the new PDC SA Masters Champion," tweeted Arendse, who will be making his televised debut at the World Championship in December but has played a key role in the formation of the SAPDO organisation in South Africa in recent years.

2012 South African Masters winner Charl Pietersen - who won a PDC Tour Card and has also played at the World Cup of Darts - was a semi-final loser this time around as he went down 8-2 to Petersen.

Arendse is the latest of the PDC's series of international qualifiers to win his place in the William Hill World Darts Championship, which will be held from December 18-January 4 at Alexandra Palace in London.
