Clinical Taylor Punishes Lloyd

PHIL TAYLOR produced a finishing master-class to end Colin Lloyd's hopes at the Bavaria World Darts Trophy.

Taylor romped into the semi-finals of the tournament with a 5-1 win over Lloyd, who out-scored the 13-times World Champion but was continually punished for missed doubles.

Taylor set the tone for the match by taking the opening two legs after Lloyd was unable to land his double, and he then checked out 112 for the set with his opponent sat on 28.

Lloyd broke Taylor's throw with a ten-darter to open the second set - only to see Taylor level matters with a 127 finish on the bull after he had missed the same double for a 121 checkout.

Lloyd took the third leg before Taylor secured the next two in style with just one dart to move two sets up - having hit six from seven doubles.

Lloyd hit his sixth maximum of the match on his way to winning the third set's opener, and he also landed another in the second leg before missing the bullseye for a second 170 finish of the week - only to see Taylor take out 127 for the leg.

He hit another 180 in taking the next leg in 12 darts, but Taylor levelled the set with double ten - as Lloyd was poised needing 16 for the set - before taking out 123 to move 3-0 up.

The fourth set saw Lloyd take the opener before Taylor finally miss his doubles in the second leg to go 2-0 down.

Taylor won the third leg with a 72 checkout but Lloyd held his nerve on double top to pull back a set.

Taylor moved 2-0 up in the fifth set with more first-dart finishing before taking a 4-1 cushion by winning the set 3-1.

Lloyd came from behind to lead 2-1 in the next, but back-to-back legs from Taylor put him into the last four.

Taylor will meet either Ronnie Baxter or Mike Veitch in the semis on Saturday.

The evening's other quarter-final was also a thriller, as teenage sensation Michael van Gerwen knocked out Mervyn King 5-4.

King led 4-2 in the game before the 17-year-old hit back to add King to his list of scalps this week, having also knocked out Topic International Darts League champion Raymond van Barneveld and Simon Whitlock.
