In-Form van Gerwen Sets New Target

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has set himself a target of claiming five televised title this year, after claiming his second big win of 2015 at the Coral UK Open.

The world number one has been in stunning form since returning to action - following a post-World Championship holiday in the Maldives - by winning The Unibet Masters at the start of February.

He went on to win three UK Open Qualifiers and the German Darts Championship before blowing away the field at the Butlins Minehead Resort last weekend to claim the UK Open title for the first time.

Van Gerwen saw off rival Peter Wright 11-5 in Sunday's UK Open final, and had also missed double 12 for a nine-darter as he averaged 115 in a stunning victory over Kim Huybrechts during another brilliant weekend in Minehead.

The achievement means that van Gerwen has now won every current PDC major other than the World Matchplay and Grand Slam of Darts - where he has previously reached the final.

Though he believes he would not be able to win every televised event this year, the 25-year-old is aiming high ahead of Thursday's Betway Premier League showdown with Phil Taylor.

"I want to win them all but it's impossible to win every tournament, I think," said van Gerwen, when asked if he could complete a clean sweep of majors. "Phil hasn't done it and he's been probably the best player on this earth.

"I'm already on two but I want to win a minimum of five - you need to set yourself targets and that's important.

"I've won the first two televised tournaments of the year, it means I'm in great form and I want to continue this. I'm doing well in the Premier League, I'm second at the moment, so I want to keep on with these performances.

"The World Matchplay and Grand Slam are targets for me as well because I've never won them before and I want to win every tournament. I know I can do that but it's really difficult, they're all good players.

"Years ago, people won televised tournaments with a 95 average, and at this moment you don't even go through the first round with a 102 or 103 average and that's what's changed - people are playing so much better."
