Anderson Enjoys Special Triumph

GARY ANDERSON has revealed the special nature of his Cash Converters Players Championship Finals triumph.

The Scot capped his return to top form in a superb 2014 by following up seven PDC ProTour triumphs with an imperious weekend at the Butlins Minehead Resort.

Anderson averaged over 100 in all five matches on his way to the title, defeating Christian Kist, Stephen Bunting, Phil Taylor, Vincent van der Voort and Adrian Lewis to lift the title.

The win was Anderson's first major TV title since the 2011 Premier League Darts and moves him back up to fourth in the PDC Order of Merit - having started the year in 18th place following a difficult two years.

The Scot admits though that, having overcome the loss of both his father and brother, last year's World Championship defeat to Michael van Gerwen - when he was 3-1 up and fell to a 4-3 reverse - proved a turning point.

"It's a great win for me," reflects Anderson. "I struggled for two years and I've tried really hard this year, put a lot of work in and played well.

"It had got to the stage where I didn't want to play. I'd lost my brother and my dad; I don't care what people say but that was my family and it took a while to get past it.

"In the World Championship, when I was 3-1 up an lost to Michael, I vowed on that day that I'd sort myself out. I've done alright, I got to Minehead as the number one seed and went on to win it.

"It makes it better that I played Phil, beat Phil and went on to win it. Against Christian Kist I averaged 110 and only won 6-5, but that's the way darts is going just now - it's getting harder and harder."

Although now based in Somerset, Anderson will be returning to Scotland this weekend for a Jocky Wilson Memorial Cup event, which will be held at Alloa Town Hall on Sunday December 7 from 12pm (noon) in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Anderson will head "Team Wilson" alongside Peter Wright, Robert Thornton, John Henderson, Gary Stone and Mike Veitch as they play against a six-player Scottish Select side, while former PDC star Jamie Harvey will also be making a guest appearance.
