Diamond Dazzles To Seal Coventry Crown

IAN WHITE secured the third PDC title of his career as he beat Dave Chisnall to win the 19th Players Championship event of the year in Coventry on Saturday.

White saw off a host of high-profile names en route to his place in the final before comfortably defeating Chisnall 6-2 at the Ricoh Arena, hitting a spectacular 146 checkout in the final leg to seal the victory.

The loss would prove to be the second final disappointment in just under a week for Chisnall though, after he was defeated in the Grand Slam of Darts final by Phil Taylor just six days ago.

Diamond’s day began with a 6-1 win over another man who had enjoyed an impressive run in Wolverhampton, youngster Keegan Brown, before he then saw off Darren Johnson and Jamie Caven to book his place in the last 16.

The 44-year-old’s best performance of the day would come in the next round as beat world number nine Robert Thornton 6-3, averaging 101.83 in the process.

A 6-4 success over Peter Hudson would follow in the quarter-finals before White then saw of the day’s surprise package, Gerwyn Price, 6-3 in the semi-finals to book his place in the last two.

Chisnall got off to a similarly strong start as he comfortably saw off Adam Hunt (6-3), Mick Todd (6-2) and Dean Winstanley (6-0) in his opening rounds to breeze into the last 16.

A narrow 6-4 win over Michael Smith came next for Chizzy before he turned on the style to dump Adrian Lewis out of the tournament, winning 6-2 with a 102.92 average.

After battling his way to the final in Wolverhampton the week before, Chisnall showed more of his fighting spirit as he came back from 5-3 down to beat Brendan Dolan 6-5 in the semi-finals and set up the final showdown with White.

Chizzy would again start slowly in the final as White raced into a 3-0 lead, but despite pulling the game back to 4-2, White was not in any mood to let his grasp on a first PDC title in just over a year slip.

Diamond just held on to his throw in the seventh leg, taking out 18 to move 5-2 in front, before saving his best checkout of the afternoon for the final leg of the day as he took out 146 to seal an impressive win in spectacular fashion.
