Anderson Backs Thornton For Glory

GARY ANDERSON has tipped fellow Scot Robert Thornton to win the McCoy's Premier League Darts, following his own elimination from the tournament.

Anderson, along with Wes Newton, was relegated from the Premier League last Thursday when he was defeated by James Wade on Judgement Night in Brighton.

The remaining eight players will now play each other once more in the league over the next five weeks in a bid to win places in May's Play-Offs at The O2 in Dublin.

Anderson had won the Premier League in his debut season in 2011, and is tipping reigning UK Open champion Thornton to follow suit, after the Scot's impressive first half of the season.

Thornton sits in fourth place in the league table on 11 points - only one behind Michael van Gerwen, Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade - and followed up his huge averages against Anderson and Simon Whitlock by defeating Phil Taylor last Thursday.

"Robert's come here in his first year and is doing what I did in 2011," said Anderson. "I quite fancy him to win this, and I hope he does it for Scotland!

"The way he's playing right now, he's got his head screwed on and he's hungry. To be honest I can't see anybody beating him - even Michael van Gerwen."

In contrast, Anderson was condemned to finishing at the foot of the league table for a second successive season, with a string of missed doubles in defeats costing him throughout the season.

His victories came against World Champion Phil Taylor and Australian star Whitlock, only adding to the frustration as he exited the Premier League after nine weeks.

"I've struggled for about a year now but my doubles never used to be a problem," said Anderson. "My game's there in practice, but for some reason it's not quite there on stage.

"I know how I can play and how I used to play, and I'm losing games that I never used to be losing. I'm throwing games away, but when it comes right I'll not be throwing them away."
