Irish Pair Relishing "Chance Of A Lifetime"

LOCAL STARS Garrett Gray and Anto McCracken admit they are "raring to go" ahead of the SkyBet World Grand Prix at the Citywest Hotel next week.

The duo will be representing Irish darts in the £130,000, which begins on Monday night at the Saggart hotel and conference venue.

McCracken (pictured) has the shortest journey of the 32 competitors, travelling from neighbouring Rathcoole to take on Mark Walsh in the first round on the opening night.

"I can't wait," said McCracken. "I've been so close before and it was heartbreaking so I've fulfilled my dreams by qualifying.

"It's the chance of a lifetime. I don't know too much about Mark but he reached the UK Open final last year and he's number 14 in the world, so it will be tough.

"But I've been practising well. I've played with (top Irish duo) Tom Kirby and Mick McGowan this week and will be playing an exhibition with John Part this weekend."

McCracken and Gray are doubles partners in the Dublin leagues will be in action in the first round on Tuesday when he faces Andy Smith in their best-of-three set clash.

"Anto and I have toured Ireland together playing so it was nice for the two of us to qualify, especially being local lads," said Gray,

"We only decided to enter the qualifiers on the Friday before they took place and both got through, which was great.

"I've tried not to get carried away since as we've had other events recently, but I've managed to get a sponsor and will be able to play on the PDC circuit now, so things are looking up.

"I can't wait to play in front of my home crowd - it will be amazing."

Phil Taylor is the defending champion, having picked up the trophy for an incredible sixth time in eight years in 2005.

"I'm really looking forward to the tournament," said Taylor, who opens his challenge against Wes Newton on Tuesday.

"The double-start format is always tricky and makes it more exciting.

"I've always enjoyed the event and the Irish crowd are brilliant, the atmosphere is electric and it brings the best out of the players.

"I know people will be gunning for my title but I'm not going to give it up without a fight. I've been playing well recently and can't wait to get going."
