Van Der Voort Wins All-Dutch Final

VINCENT VAN DER VOORT defeated Raymond van Barneveld 6-4 to win the fourth Speedy Hire UK Open Qualifier in an all-Dutch final at Wigan's Robin Park Tennis Centre on Sunday.

Van der Voort gained revenge for his loss to van Barneveld in the 2007 UK Open final in nearby Bolton with a fine display in a high-quality final - which saw both players miss double 12 for a nine-dart finish.

After the first three legs went with the throw to leave van Barneveld ahead, with the five-time World Champion hitting legs of 14 and 15 darts, van der Voort opened the fourth with back-to-back 180s to set up a potential nine-dart finish.

He missed double 12 for the 141 checkout which would have completed the feat, although he returned to post double three for an 11-darter.

Van Barneveld then matched that in the fifth leg, also hitting successive 180s, treble 20 and treble 19 but also landing just inside double 12, before double six saw him edge 3-2 up in 11 darts.

Van der Voort levelled on double six and then took a crucial break of throw on with a fourth 180 of the final in a 13-darter.

He then checked out 64 in two darts to lead 5-3, and although he missed double 15 for a 150 game shot in the next as van Barneveld landed double nine to keep the game alive, van der Voort posted another 180
and finished 70 on double 16 to claim the win.

"It's great to win another event," said van der Voort, who picked up two Players Championship victories last year.

"Raymond played really well in the final and throughout the day but to defeat him in the final makes it extra special.

"We will play again next weekend in the RTL7 International Masters in Zuiderduin and I'm looking forward to that. Hopefully I can be successful again there!"

Van der Voort had enjoyed some fine displays throughout Sunday's event, defeating John Part 6-4 in the semi-finals and Mark Walsh by the same scoreline in the last eight.

He had edged past Matt Clark in the last 16 with a 6-5 victory, which followed up his earlier defeats of Martyn Turner, Richie Burnett and John O'Shea.

Van Barneveld's run saw him reach his first PDC ProTour final since April 2009, although he has only made fleeting appearances in the non-televised tournaments since then.

However, his £3,000 prize money ensures he will qualify to compete in June's Speedy Hire UK Open televised finals in Bolton as he bids for a third victory in that tournament.

His run on the day included a 6-2 semi-final defeat of Mervyn King, 6-4 wins over Robert Thornton and Alex Roy and a whitewash of fellow "Barney" Michael Barnard.

King, who defeated van der Voort in a Players Championship final in January, whitewashed World Champion Adrian Lewis on his way to the semis, where he was joined by resurgent John Part.

The Canadian has already won one Players Championship this year and was two games short of adding a second title before losing out to van der Voort.

Spain's Antonio Alcinas reached the last eight before losing a deciding leg against Part, with Walsh, Thornton and Lewis also making the quarter-finals.
