ROB MODRA claimed a hat-trick of victories during the DPA's Australian Open weekend on the Gold Coast, with Phil Hazel also victorious.
Hazel defeated Geoff Kime 6-3 to win Thursday's opening event at the Robina Community Centre, claiming his second victory of the year on the DartPlayers Australia circuit.
The Kiwi overcame Barry Jouannet 6-2 in the semi-finals, and won by the same scoreline against Ben Gaitor and Barry Gardner in the latter stages, while he also overcame Wayne Weening in the last 32.
Kime's run included a whitewash of last year's Ladbrokes.com World Championship qualifier Shane Tichowitsch, and he also defeated Kyle Anderson, Ian Brown and Warren Parry in the knockout phase.
Modra defeated Warren Parry 6-4 in the final of Friday's second day, and also picked up wins over Gardner, Platt, Kime and Sean Reed in the knockout stage.
Jouannet reached a second successive semi-final, before losing 6-3 to Parry, while Hazel was defeated by Anthony Fleet in the last 32.
Saturday's third day saw Modra and Hazel contest the final, with Adelaide's Modra a 6-2 winner in the final.
Gardner's strong form continued as he reached the semis, with Modra whitewashing him and also defeating Reed, Ray Kingston and Josh Kime - the son of Thursday's runner-up Geoff - along the way.
Modra completed a treble on the weekend by claiming the $3,000 first prize in Sunday's climactic Australian Open event, defeating Brisbane's Josh Kime 6-1 in the final.
Modra's success on the Gold Coast saw him defeat Dave Harrington, Col Embrey, Warren Parry and Ken Moir to reach the final for a third successive day.
Kime claimed a $1,500 prize as runner-up, reaching the final with a victory against Les Luke in the semis, having also defeated Russell Stewart in the knockout phase.
The weekend also featured an Australia versus New Zealand Test Match, which was won by the home team on Saturday.
