SCOTT WAITES is given a constant reminder of the greatest night of his darts career every time that he visits his Dad's house - as he is made to relive the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts final!
Waites will begins the defence of his William Hill Grand Slam of Darts title on Saturday night with his opening group match against Michael van Gerwen.
The Yorkshireman took the £100,000 first prize last year in an extraordinary final, coming from 8-0 down to defeat James Wade 16-12.
As Waites prepares to return to Wolverhampton, he revealed that his father is keen to relive the moment every time the 34-year-old visits.
"My dad's got it on his Sky Plus and every time I go round to see him he puts it on!" said Waites. "I think he still watches it at least once a week.
"He makes me sit and watch the first eight legs that I lost as well, but it's a great memory.
"I've always been quite a confident player but I played well and took my chances when they came last year."
Waites enters this year's tournament in fine form, having won the World Masters title amongst a run of four successive victories since the summer.
"I don't know what it is about this time of year, but I seem to come good," added Waites.
"The World Masters was quite strange to be honest. Really I was putting all my efforts into getting past Martin Adams in the semi-finals.
"Then I had to play Dean Winstanley, who's my team-mate for Yorkshire, in the final and having lost a final before I was determined not to lose again.
"I played pretty well and am really happy with it - it might have been my best televised performance ever.
"I've had four event wins and I had two darts to win the Turkish Open as well against Ulf Ceder so it so it could have been give event wins."
Waites had been defeated 5-4 by van Gerwen in their opening game of the first-ever Grand Slam in 2007, and admits he is keen to gain revenge but, more importantly, get off to a winning start in Group A.
"I think the first game is the most important one and everyone's going to be trying to win that," he said.
"If you do win it, you know you've got to probably only win one of the next two games so you've got a great chance. If you do lose that, there's a lot of pressure on the second game, which you probably don't need.
"I'm looking forward to playing him because I'm playing quite well.
"I'm not sure how he is playing but I owe Michael one because he beat me in the first Grand Slam! I'll prepare myself like I did last year and hopefully get the same sort of results."
