PRE-TOURNAMENT favourites England are on the brink of crashing out of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts after Canada's Ken MacNeil and John Part defeated Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis in their Singles games on Friday night.
Taylor went down 4-3 to MacNeil, giving him echoes of a defeat in the second round of the 2010 World Cup of Darts to Spain when he was partnered by James Wade.
Double World Champion Lewis has taken Wade's place in the England team in this event, but was unable to take victory in his own Singles clash with Part, who took out a brilliant 140 finish to win their game in a deciding leg.
The results mean that Taylor and Lewis must now win Saturday afternoon's Doubles game between the nations to force a sudden-death leg at the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg.
Reigning champions Netherlands, meanwhile, face a winner-takes-all Doubles clash with Austria on Saturday after Raymond van Barneveld and Mensur Suljovic picked up respective wins for their countries.
Van Barneveld came from 3-2 down to defeat Dietmar Burger 4-3, while Suljovic won in the same manner against Vincent van der Voort, who hit a 140 checkout during the game but could not better the Austrian's 14-darter in the deciding leg.
Australia, who were semi-finalists in the 2010 World Cup of Darts, made a strong start to the event as Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson dropped just one leg between them in victories over Ireland's Mick McGowan and William O'Connor.
Welshmen Mark Webster and Richie Burnett also impressed as they defeated Croatian pair Tonci Restovic and Boris Krcmar with 4-0 and 4-3 wins respectively, as they put one foot into the quarter-finals.
Scotland also lead 2-0 in their clash with South Africa, although Gary Anderson had to come from 3-0 down to defeat Shawn Hogan 4-3 before Peter Wright overcame emerging star Devon Petersen 4-1.
Hosts Germany are level with the USA following their Singles games, with Jyhan Artut defeating Gary Mawson 4-3 and Darin Young seeing off Bernd Roith 4-2.
Northern Ireland are also all-square with Denmark, for whom Jann Hoffmann picked up victory over World Grand Prix finalist Brendan Dolan before left-hander Michael Mansell defeated Per Laursen 4-1.
Belgium and Sweden will meet in another decisive Doubles game knowing that the winner will progress on Saturday afternoon after sharing the spoils on Friday, with Kim Huybrechts defeating Dennis Nilsson 4-1 and Magnus Caris replying with a 4-2 win over Kurt Van De Rijck.
Saturday afternoon's decisive Doubles games will be followed in the evening session by the quarter-finals, which will see both Singles and Doubles games combined.
