Countdown On To Austrian Opener

THE first European Tour event will begin on Friday at the Arena Nova in Wiener Neustadt, as 64 players compete for the £15,000 Austrian Darts Open title.

The £82,100 tournament has seen players battle for places alongside the world's top 32 in qualifiers held in the UK and Europe in the past month, with four Austrian hopefuls joined by 20 players from the UK Qualifier and eight aces from across Europe.

The tournament will begin with play across two stages at the Arena Nova on Friday, with all 32 first round games being played across the afternoon and evening sessions.

Play then proceeds on one main stage from the last 32 onwards, with the second round split across two sessions on Saturday and Sunday seeing the third round played in the afternoon and the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final held in the evening session.

World number one Phil Taylor opens up on Friday night against newcomer Gaz Cousins, who turned professional in January at Qualifying School.

World Champion Adrian Lewis faces one of 2011's shooting stars James Richardson in round one, while James Wade plays Warwickshire's Prakash Jiwa, Gary Anderson meets Scott Rand and Simon Whitlock plays Holland's Mareno Michels.

Raymond van Barneveld will begin his challenge against Arron Monk, who won two of the first three PDC Unicorn Youth Tour events held last weekend in Derby, with the other winner, Michael Smith, taking on Jamie Caven.

Austrian number one Mensur Suljovic drew Justin Pipe, with other home stars Dietmar Burger, Martin Kurecka and Zoran Lerchbacher takign on Terry Jenkins, Dave Chisnall and Alan Tabern respectively.

The tournament will be played in a bracket format, meaning that Taylor or Cousins would take on either Richie Burnett - the number 32 seed - or Michael Rosenauer in round two, with Lewis or Richardson meeting number 31 seed Peter Wright or Ireland's William O'Connor.

Sunday will see the order of play continue in the bracket as players compete for the £15,000 first prize.

All games during the tournament are the best of 11 legs, with each game expected to last around 30 minutes.
