German Darts Championship Third Round

ADRIAN LEWIS stormed into the German Darts Championship quarter-finals with a super-show against Peter Wright on Sunday afternoon, as Michael van Gerwen whitewashed Stephen Bunting in Hildesheim.

Lewis averaged over 108 in a brilliant display as he remained on course to pick up the £25,000 first prize in the PDC European Tour event.

He opened with a 14-darter and took out 146 for a 12-darter to double his lead, with Wright taking out a 14-dart leg of his own to hit back before levelling.

Lewis, though, regained the lead with another 12-dart leg and won the next three with successive 14-darters - landing three 180s along the way - to move through to a last eight meeting with Vincent van der Voort.

"I played really well and as long as I can maintain that I'll be happy," said Lewis. "I'm putting the hard work in and it's showing, and if I can play like this I'll have a good chance of winning this title."

Dutch ace van der Voort, last year's Austrian Darts Open winner, defied three ton-plus finishes from James Wade to take a 6-4 win from their third round clash at Halle 39.

He led 4-0 - hitting legs of 11 and 13 darts in a superb start - before Wade finished 104 in successive legs and then took out 141 to pull back to 4-3.

The next two legs were shared, but van der Voort landed three ton-plus scores in leg ten before sealing victory with another 13-darter as he reached his sixth successive ranking quarter-final.

World number one Michael van Gerwen needed just 12 minutes to whitewash Stephen Bunting 6-0, book-ending the performance with a pair of 11-darters.

"I took my chances and I'm really happy that I won 6-0," said van Gerwen. "It looks easy but it wasn't, Stephen's a fantastic player."

Van Gerwen now meets Joe Murnan in the quarter-finals, after the Bolton ace reached that stage for the first time in a ranking event with a 6-4 win over Brendan Dolan.

Murnan has also defeated Michael Barnard and Ian White this weekend, and said: "I'm just happy to be here - I'm overwhelmed by it all but I want to keep it going now. I'm just going to enjoy myself and see what happens."

World Champion Gary Anderson continued his strong form with a 6-2 win over Steve Beaton, who averaged 102 and hit four 180s as he fell to defeat in a high-quality contest.

Anderson will meet Justin Pipe in the last eight in a rematch of last year's German Darts Championship final after the Taunton ace defeated Mervyn King 6-2.

Pipe enjoyed a superb start by taking the opening three legs without reply, with King pulling back to 4-2 only to see the former Austrian Darts Open winner take out 110 and 74 to seal the win.

Robert Thornton booked his quarter-final spot with a strong display to defeat Simon Whitlock 6-4, hitting four 180 and six doubles from 12 shots against the Australian.

After the first four legs were shared, the Scot posted an 11-darter before Whitlock took out 120 to level, but Thornton took out 60 and 100 - for a break - to pull clear before defying a 13-darter from his opponent by sealing the win on tops.

Austria's Mensur Suljovic progressed to a quarter-final with Thornton as he defeated Michael Smith 6-4, punishing the former World Youth Champion for missing 13 darts at doubles during the game.

Smith landed five 180s during the contest and shared the opening eight legs, but was unable to finish off the qualifier in the ninth and tenth as Suljovic stepped in to claim the win.

The £115,000 tournament concludes on Sunday evening, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place at Halle 39 in Hildesheim.
