Gibraltar Darts Trophy Day Two

REIGNING Gibraltar Darts Trophy champion James Wade was joined in the third round of this year's tournament by in-form World Champion Gary Anderson and world number one Michael van Gerwen.

Anderson lifted the roof at the Victoria Stadium with a superb display of darts to defeat Devon Petersen 6-2 in their second round contest.

The Scot kicked off the match with the first of four 180s and landed two 13-darters and a pair of 12-dart legs for his opening four legs before ending the game with an average of 105.22.

Anderson now takes on the ever-popular Terry Jenkins, who defeated Tony Newell 6-2 in the last 32.

2014 Gibraltar Darts Trophy champion Wade opened the defence of his title with a 6-3 win over Spanish newcomer Cristo Reyes, as the left-hander set up a third round clash with Vincent van der Voort.

The Dutchman, who won last year's Austrian Darts Open, was a 6-3 winner against Kevin McDine as he won through to the last 16 once again.

World number one Michael van Gerwen also moved into the third round, taking a narrow 6-5 win over Kevin Painter.

Van Gerwen looked to have the match in his pocket after racing into an early 5-2 lead, but a gutsy performance from Painter saw him win the next three legs to level matters, only for the Dutchman to take the deciding leg with a superb 13-darter.

Van Gerwen now faces Brian Woods, who knocked out 2014 Gibraltar Darts Trophy finalist Steve Beaton 6-5.

Woods hit back from 3-0 down to level and also found himself 5-3 behind before hitting back with another treble to take a gutsy deciding-leg victory.

Home hopes in Gibraltar were ended in ruthless fashion by Mervyn King as he whitewashed local policeman Antony Lopez 6-0, landing a 160 finish as he overcame the only remaining Host Nation Qualifier with a 96 average.

Three of the top six seeded players were all knocked out on Saturday as Michael Smith, Peter Wright and Robert Thornton suffered defeats to Jamie Lewis, Wayne Jones and Gerwyn Price.

Youngster Nathan Derry also impressed as he knocked out a seed, averaging 100.9 and hitting a perfect six doubles from as many attempts to defeat Ian White 6-1.

Derry now meets Jelle Klaasen in the third round on Sunday after the Dutchman recorded an average of 95.29 in his win over Brendan Dolan.

Justin Pipe overcame Mike Zuydwijk 6-4, while another Dutch youngster, Benito van de Pas, went down 6-4 to Simon Whitlock.

The all-Belgian battle between Kim Huybrechts and Dimitri Van den Bergh saw the Premier League star claim a narrow 6-5 win, while Stephen Bunting was defeated 6-3 by Andy Smith as he moved through to meet 2013 runner-up Jamie Lewis.

The £115,000 tournament concludes on Sunday, with the afternoon session's third round followed in the evening session by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
