Home Delight For Hopp And Seyler In Riesa

GERMANY’S Max Hopp and Thomas Seyler delighted the home crowd in Riesa as they secured wins on the opening day of the 2015 International Darts Open.

18-year-old Hopp, who hit a brilliant nine-darter in yesterday’s Home Nation Qualifier, continued his fine form as he secured a 6-2 win against Kevin McDine, taking out 102 in the second leg on his way to an impressive victory.

Bremerhaven-born Seyler would also impress at the Sachsenarena as he took out finishes of 100 and 121 during a thumping 6-1 victory against Spain’s Antonio Alcinas to set up a second round clash with Robert Thornton.

There would be less joy for Hopp and Seyler’s fellow Home Nation Qualifiers Daniel Zygla and Jyhan Artut though as the pair both lost out in the first round to Mark Barilli and Jonny Clayton respectively.

After an even start to the match, Zygla looked to have stolen a march as he moved into a 4-2 lead. But Barilli would hit back superbly as he took the next four legs on the spin and finished with a 25 checkout to secure the victory.

Artut would be left to rue missed chances as Clayton produced a spectacular comeback, recovering from 4-1 down to secure a 6-4 win.

Artut kicked off in style with a brilliant 132 finish in the opening leg before taking three of the next four legs to move into a commanding 4-1 lead. Clayton would fire back in style though as he took the final five legs – including a 114 checkout – to seal a spectacular 6-4 victory.

Cristo Reyes produced a brilliant display as he averaged 100.63 and 75% on the doubles in a convincing 6-1 win over Dean Winstanley.

The Spaniard dominated throughout and landed three 180s, a 121 checkout and an 11-darter on his way to victory and now faces the tricky test of Kim Huybrechts in round two.

Stephen Bunting was another man in form as he produced a strong display to beat Jamie Robinson 6-2 and set up a tasty second round clash with Jamie Caven.

Robert Marijanovic kicked off his weekend in style as he sealed a brilliant whitewash win over former Lakeside Champion Christian Kist, winning 6-0.

The Croatian began with a 93 checkout in the opening leg and didn't look back as he dominated throughout and capitalised on a host of missed doubles from Kist to storm to victory.

Mickey Mansell would produce a similarly impressive display as he comprehensively defeated Dutch youngster Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-1.

After reaching the quarter-finals of the bwin World Cup of Darts with Northern Ireland last weekend, Mansell continued his good form and looked deadly on the doubles throughout as he ran out a comfortable winner, with a brilliant 120 checkout in the penultimate leg the highlight.

Mansell's Northern Irish counterpart Daryl Gurney is also into round two after he averaged 96.86 during his 6-4 victory against Ken MacNeil.

After losing the opening leg to the Canadian, Gurney dominated the encounter and landed four 180s and 101 checkout as he set up a tricky second round match-up with Simon Whitlock.

Jamie Lewis landed four maximums during his first round 6-3 victory against Welsh counterpart Mark Webster.

Webster responded well as he levelled the match at 3-3 after falling 3-1 behind, but couldn’t continue his form as Lewis finished with a flourish, sealing the win with a brilliant 11-darter in the final leg.

James Wilson was another man celebrating as he defeated European Tour debutant Eddie Dootson 6-2.

Wilson had the German crowd dreaming of a nine-darter as he kicked off with six perfect darts in the second leg before eventually landing a 13-darter en route to opening up a 5-1 lead. Although Dootson would hit back with a stunning 156 checkout, it would not knock Wilson off track as he secured victory in the next leg, taking out 88.

World number one Michael van Gerwen will look to continue his 100 percent record in this year’s European Tour against William O’Connor in round two after the Irishman ended the afternoon session with a 6-2 win against an out-of-sorts Mike De Decker.

O'Connor flew out of the blocks as he raced into a 4-0 lead before Belgium's De Decker found some form to take two of the next three legs. But that would be as good as it got for the youngster as O'Connor took out 42 in the following leg to wrap up the win.

Matt Clark picked up victory in the opening game of the day, edging out John Henderson 6-5 in a tight contest.

Henderson hit back from 2-0 down to lead 5-4 only to miss one match dart in the tenth leg as Clark followed up earlier finishes of 143 and 122 with an 87 checkout to force a decider, which he won on double five to move through to face Peter Wright on Saturday.

Despite landing five maximums, Matthew Edgar was made to work hard for his place in round two as he also won through in a deciding leg against Darren Webster.

Edgar scored well throughout and set up a nine-darter in the third leg as he began with back-to-back 180s before eventually taking out 44 for a 12-darter to move 3-1 in front. Webster would hit back though as the pair swapped blows in the final legs before Edgar eventually finished the job with a 32 checkout in the decider.

Rowby-John Rodriguez kicked off the evening session in Riesa as he beat fellow youngster Adam Hunt 6-4 in an entertaining encounter.

The Austrian started well as he quickly moved into a 3-1 lead before the pair exchanged ton-plus checkouts as Hunt first superbly took out 148 and Rodriguez responded with a 113 checkout to regain his two-leg advantage. And Rodriguez would soon wrap up the win as he checked out 32 for a 13-darter.

Mensur Suljovic was the day’s other winner as he produced a strong display to beat Mark Walsh 6-2.

Suljovic started strongly, racing into a 3-0 lead before Walsh found his form to bring the game back to 3-2. However, the Austrian would kick on again as he took the final three legs on the spin, missing the bull for a 170 checkout in the final leg before taking out 25 on his next visit to seal the win.
