MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has become the first player to pass £1.25 million on the PDC Order of Merit, following his back-to-back successes in the BetVictor World Matchplay and HappyBet European Darts Open.
The Dutch star's status as world number one has continued to soar during 2016, with victories in the Coral UK Open in March and in three previous European Tour events helping to move him further clear of second-placed Gary Anderson, the World Champion.
Van Gerwen pocketed £100,000 as he retained the World Matchplay title in Blackpool before ending July with a further £25,000 as he won the European Darts Open event in Dusseldorf.
Those totals have seen the 27-year-old move on to £1,270,000 on the two-year PDC Order of Merit, based on prize money won in a two-year period in ranking tournaments - with Phil Taylor being the only other player to have passed £1 million since the Order of Merit was introduced in 2007.
Following the recent World Matchplay, Austria's Mensur Suljovic has moved into the world's top 16 for the first time, while Australian ace Kyle Anderson has jumped into the top 32.
