Confident Suljovic Makes Dublin Return

MENSUR SULJOVIC returns to the scene of his first major semi-final at Citywest Hotel in confident mood ahead of the Unibet World Grand Prix.

The Austrian star's emergence as a contender at the top level continued as he battled past James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Vincent van der Voort to reach the last four in Dublin 12 months ago.

Having previously reached the quarter-finals of two successive UK Opens and the 2015 World Matchplay, a run to a major semi-final was another step forward for the 44-year-old, despite his eventual loss to Robert Thornton.

Suljovic has since won his maiden ranking title, at a European Tour event last month, and moved into the world's top 16 for the first time.

"I enjoy all the big tournaments but I have special memories of Dublin as it is where I made my first big semi-final," said Suljovic, in an interview for the Unibet World Grand Prix programme.

"It's a great tournament and I like it very much, I hope to be successful again this year."

Suljovic finally claimed a PDC title at last month's International Darts Open in Riesa, edging out Kim Huybrechts 6-5 in a thrilling final - and he admits that the win has boosted his self-confidence.

"I now can believe in myself winning tournaments," he said. "I needed it to progress further in this sport.

"I've always tried to believe that one day I will make it and win. With the good results I was achieving it just had to happen one day."
