Van Gerwen Favourite For Euro Treble

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is the Evens favourite to win a third successive title at the Unibet European Championship going into this weekend's tournament in Hasselt, Belgium.

World number one van Gerwen has lifted the European Championship title for the past two years, landing a nine-dart finish on his way to glory in 2014 before enjoying a famous comeback win in last year's final against Gary Anderson.

The Dutch star will meet Simon Whitlock in Friday's first round as he opens his challenge to complete a European Championship hat-trick, and is the Evens pre-tournament favourite with sponsors Unibet.

Phil Taylor is the 4/1 second favourite, with World Champion Anderson 7/1, in-form Dave Chisnall 16/1 and world number five Peter Wright 20/1.

Austria's Mensur Suljovic and world number seven James Wade - both European Tour winners this year - are 28/1 chances with Unibet, with Belgian ace Kim Huybrechts 40/1 to claim his first major title on home soil this weekend and Dutchman Jelle Klaasen rated at 50/1.

Unibet's Match Odds for Friday's first round see van Gerwen the 1/8 favourite against 5/1 chance Whitlock, who won the 2012 European Championship.

Four-time European Championship winner Taylor is 1/5 odds-on favourite against Alan Norris (18/5), who won the year's final European Tour event in Germany recently.

Anderson is 1/2 as he takes on Wade (8/5) in a high-profile first round clash, while Wright (3/10) is favoured ahead of opponent Justin Pipe (5/2).
