Borland nine darts away from triggering £100k Selco bonus

Willie Borland (Lawrence Lustig, PDC)

Man of the moment Willie Borland will be nine darts away from triggering a mammoth £100,000 jackpot when he returns to the William Hill World Darts Championship stage on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Scot stole the early headlines at the Christmas sporting spectacle by hitting a dramatic nine-dart finish in the deciding leg of his thrilling first round encounter with Bradley Brooks.

That achievement has put Borland on the brink of sealing the six-figure bonanza on offer from leading builders merchant Selco Builders Warehouse, an official partner of the PDC, for the first player to hit two nine-dart finishes in the tournament.

Should Borland repeat that magic in his second round match against Ryan Searle on Wednesday lunchtime, he would win £50,000 - with a member of the public who enters a special prize draw and Selco's nominated charity Global's Make Some Noise each receiving £25,000.

Members of the public can book their place in the draw by completing the form at this link before any player hits a second nine-dart finish.

Borland, from East Lothian and playing in his first PDC World Championship, said: "I'd be lying if I said I hadn't had some thoughts about hitting a second nine-darter and winning £50,000 for me and the money for the member of the public and the charity.

"It's a huge amount of money and a brilliant initiative from Selco which has added even more interest to the tournament.

"Hitting the first nine-darter was the highlight of my career, especially given the context of it, but if I was to do it again either against Ryan or later in the tournament, that would certainly top it.

"My main aim remains to go as far as I can in what is the biggest tournament of the year but I certainly wouldn't say no to the nine-dart bonus, so that will be on my mind as well."

Carine Jessamine, marketing director at Selco, said: "When we came up with the initiative, we wanted a player to hit a nine-dart finish in the early stages of the tournament to build the excitement and Willie has managed to achieve that.

"All eyes will be on him on Wednesday and we wish him well in his quest to not only land himself a huge sum of money, but also to make it the dream Christmas for a member of the public and Global's Make Some Noise.

"There is also still chance for another player to produce some magic and hit two nine-dart finishes before Willie so it's still all up for grabs."

Darius Labanauskas also hit a perfect leg in his first round encounter against Mike De Decker on Saturday, but the Lithuanian went on to lose the match and as such has now missed out on his chance to activate the bonus.

Global's Make Some Noise improves the lives of disadvantaged people in communities by working with small charities across the UK keeping crucial services going, such as food banks, domestic violence and mental health helplines, carer support, community projects and employment programmes.
