Wright credits 'Taylor mentality' for opening night triumph

Peter Wright believes his Cazoo Premier League Night One victory was down to a new 'Phil Taylor esque' mentality.

The world number two was victorious on the opening night in Cardiff, defeating hometown hero Jonny Clayton in the final as new era began in at a sell-out Motorpoint Arena.

Wright maintained the mesmerising standard that saw him become a two-time World Champion in January, averaging 113.02 in the final.

In his ninth successive campaign, Wright got off to a perfect start with wins over Michael Smith and Gary Anderson to reach the final where a win over reigning champion Clayton saw ihm pocket the £10,000 winners' prize and land five points to take an early lead in the table.

"I've got a new feeling when I play now," said Wright who averaged over 100 across the night.

"I used to wonder how Phil [Taylor] concentrated for each match but now I've got that feeling. I believe I can go on and win every single tournament I play, but I also know I can play better.

"The new format gives you time to get used to the stage, that's why I think I played so well in the final.

"You also get to experience the amazing crowd up to three times a night, so I love it.

"It didn't feel like a 113 avg in the final, I could've performed a lot better but it's a win.

"I had a bad tournament at The Masters so I felt I had to show why I am World Champion.

"Every night will be totally different but it's a good start; hopefully I'll have good runs throughout the rest of the Premier League."

Despite his opening night success, Wright has refused to rule out a change of equipment in future weeks.

"I can play better with the fat darts I used at The Masters," Wright added.

"My wife Jo despairs but I won't stop changing and trying new things; that's just my way."

Wright will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday in the year's opening Players Championship events in Barnsley - watch both days of action live on PDCTV.
