Littler set for BBC Sports Personality Awards night

Luke Littler

The 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony takes place tonight, with Luke Littler among the contenders for the event’s main honour.

The teenage sensation has enjoyed a sensational ascent throughout the last 12 months, which has seen him nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year awards.

Littler’s remarkable rise to prominence began at last year’s World Darts Championship, when the 16-year-old followed up his World Youth Championship triumph with a fairy-tale run to the final on his Alexandra Palace debut.

Despite losing in a thrilling final to Luke Humphries - in a contest watched by a record audience on Sky Sports for a non-football event - Littler's rivalry with the World Champion has continued throughout 2024.

Littler overcame Humphries with the aid of a nine-darter to win the Premier League title in May, before taking glory in September’s World Series of Darts Finals and November’s Grand Slam of Darts.

The Warrington wonderkid has won ten titles during 2024 - three more than any other player - while he’s also landed four nine-dart finishes and risen to fourth on the PDC Order of Merit.

Littler's rivals for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award are Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodkinson, England and Real Madrid footballer Jude Bellingham, England cricketer Joe Root, Paralympic cyclist Sarah Storey and Olympic triathlete Alex Yee.

The 17-year-old has also been shortlisted for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award alongside Skateboarder Sky Brown and Para-swimmer William Ellard, after an initial ten nominations were narrowed down to a top three.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony will take place from 1900 GMT live on BBC One, and voting for both awards will open during Tuesday’s live awards show.
