HISTORY will be made at the StanJames.com World Matchplay, with the semi-finals and final to be shown in 3D by Sky Sports for the first time.
Darts will become the fifth sport to be featured in 3D, with over 1,000 venues in the UK and Ireland screening coverage of the final two days from the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on July 24 & 25.
Sky Sports have already screened football, rugby union and cricket live in 3D and will also show Super League live this month alongside the ground-breaking coverage of darts.
The darts coverage will feature an additional seven camera rigs, including two cameras above the dartboard - the size of ice cubes - to enhance the image of darts flying through the air in 3D.
"It's a revolution in darts TV broadcasting," said Sky Sports commentator Sid Waddell, who has been involved with televised darts for over 30 years.
"For years I've described our coverage as resembling a rock and roll concert on your telly. Now it's going to resemble a rock and roll concert in your pub - I can't wait!!
Sky Sports' 3D coverage will accompany their regular coverage of the tournament in High Definition on Sky Sports HD1 and Sky Sports 1.
