Bavaria World Darts Trophy - Day Five

RONNIE BAXTER won the Roses battle with Martin Atkins in straight sets to move into the quarter-finals of the Bavaria World Darts Trophy.

Baxter had little trouble in dispatching the Leeds-based player to set up a last eight clash with Scotland's Mike Veitch.

He opened the match with a 115 finish and took the first three sets 3-1, punishing missed doubles from the number five seed to put himself in command.

Atkins missed chances in the next two legs as Baxter put himself within touching distance of the win, and the world number three took out double eight to secure his place in the quarter-finals.

Earlier in the evening, Martin Adams came from behind to edge out Tony O'Shea in a tie break to move into the last eight.

O'Shea took the first set without reply and came from 2-1 down in the next to move 2-0 up in the match.

Adams found his range and took the next two sets 3-1 to level matters before O'Shea edged the fifth set in a decider, nailing double top with his last dart.

A maximum from Adams in the fifth leg of the sixth set enabled him to level matters once more and ensure the game went into a deciding set.

He won the opener before back-to-back legs from O'Shea put him to within one of the match, with Adams then sending the match into a tie-break by comfortably taking the fourth leg.

Adams stepped in to move 3-2 up with double 16 after O'Shea missed three darts for the leg, but then missed three darts for the match in the next as the Cheshire player levelled up the set.

Adams broke O'Shea once more in the seventh leg, and then landed a maximum to give him the cushion to land double 18 for the match.

Adams will now meet Niels de Ruiter in the quarter-finals, after the Dutch youngster overcame fellow countryman Vincent van der Voort 4-2.

The 23-year-old produced some excellent finishing, including a 170 checkout to earn himself a share of the high finish prize with Colin Lloyd and Mervyn King.

His 53 percent checkout success rate was in stark contrast to van der Voort's 23%, and he never looked like coming back after falling 3-1 behind.

Although he edged the fifth set 3-2, a fourth ton-plus finish from de Ruiter sent him away in the next and he took the win with a sparkling 13 dart leg.

The night's third game saw Mervyn King overcome Darryl Fitton 4-1.

Fitton bettered King's average for much of the contrest, but never recovered from going 2-0 down.

He took out a 138 finish to win the third set in a decider, but King won six of the next eight legs - including an 11-darter - to progress
