JOHN PART won Sunday's Players Championship at Hayling Island with a 3-1 victory over Mervyn King in the final.
Part capped a memorable week by taking the £5,000 first prize in the event - having flown back to Canada following his exit in the Blue Square UK Open last weekend to win the Canadian National Championship on Wednesday before returning to the UK for the weekend's tournaments.
The two-time World Champion hit five 180s in the final, reeling off four straight legs to win the last two sets after King hit back to level matters in the second.
The win means that Part will defend his Las Vegas Desert Classic title next month in confident mood after victories over Wes Newton, Adrian Lewis, Peter Manley and Dennis Priestley earlier in the event.
"I've pushed myself hard this week but it's been worthwhile," said Part. "Winning in Canada was fantastic and ideal preparation for this in many ways.
"I probably did my best scoring of the day in the final but the best three darts I had was in the semi against Dennis. He missed the bull for a 161 and then I took out the same score, and it changed the match in my favour.
"I've got a couple of weeks off now before the Las Vegas Desert Classic and I'm going into that full of confidence."
King's run to the final earned him £2,500 and also saw him secure a place in the Stan James World Matchplay as one of the four highest placed players outside of the world's top 28 in the Players Championship Order of Merit.
King edged out PDC newcomer Tony Eccles 3-2 in the semi-finals, with the latter missing two darts for the match in the deciding leg.
Had Eccles reached the final, he would have ousted Steve Beaton - a semi-finalist in Saturday's event - from the final qualifying place for the World Matchplay.
Kevin McDine missed double 12 for a nine-darter against King in the quarter-finals - losing the leg and eventually the game in another encouraging run for the emerging youngster.
Steve Brown followed up Saturday's run to the quarter-finals by reaching the last 16 on Sunday, losing to Peter Manley and then narrowly missing out on a World Matchplay place due to King's display.
Adrian Gray's early loss left him with some anxious moments during the afternoon before he held on for a World Matchplay debut alongside fellow qualifier Michael van Gerwen.
Mark Dudbridge backed up Saturday's semi-final appearance with a run to the quarter-finals, where he paid for missed doubles against Priestley.
James Wade took a straight sets win over van Gerwen in his board final, but was then defeated by Priestley by the same scoreline in the last 16.
Alan Caves and Peter Allen were other board winners, while Saturday's champion Terry Jenkins lost in the last 32 to Eccles.
