Phil Taylor linked up with Blue Square and the News of the World to "launch" the "prototype" square dartboard on Sunday.
The move would have revolutionised the face of professional darts - but luckily for players worried about learning the new angles the idea was merely an April Fool's Day spoof.
Taylor admitted: "It would be a revolutionary idea - but thank goodness it was only an April Fool joke!
"We are so used to the traditional round dartboard that it would have been a massive change to make!"
