MICHAEL VAN GERWEN hailed the 'four best legs of my career' as he celebrated glory in the Unibet European Championship following a sensational final against Gary Anderson in Belgium.
Van Gerwen retained his European Championship title in incredible fashion as he came from 10-7 down against the World Champion to edge an 11-10 win.
The Dutchman produced legs of 14, 14, 13 and 14 darts, and crucially never allowed Anderson a dart at a double for the title during a thrilling ending to the tournament.
Despite hitting four televised nine-dart finishes during his career and also winning the likes of the World Championship and Premier League, van Gerwen admitted that his finale in Hasselt was a high point.
"Maybe I played the four best legs of my career under this pressure and I'm really happy with that," he said. "It's fantastic to win a tournament like this in that way.
"I was waiting for a mistake and when you get a chance you need to take it with both hands, and that's exactly what I did. I fought for everything but I still don't know where that finish came from.
"At 10-7 I won a leg on my own throw to make it 10-8, and then I knew it was now or never and I broke his throw, and I had a little feeling then that I was going to win."
Anderson had taken victory when the pair met in the Premier League final in May, and as the respective world number one and current World Champion the duo are enjoying a battle for darting supremacy.
"Gary's a fantastic player, incredible," said van Gerwen. "He was playing fantastic darts and I couldn't find a way to put him under pressure because his scoring power at the right moments was fantastic.
"But when he needed to, he didn't show his A-game and I did, and that made me the winner this weekend."
