World Championship - International Update

FOUR more international qualifiers have been confirmed for the William Hill World Darts Championship, with Scandinavian duo Kim Viljanen and Per Laursen joined by South Africa's Warrick Scheffer and Ireland's Mick McGowan.

Finland's Viljanen and Denmark's Laursen were the leading two players from the 2015 Scandinavian Darts Corporation's Order of Merit following their eight-event season.

Viljanen won three of the eight events during the year as he secured his return to Alexandra Palace after making his debut in the 2015 William Hill World Darts Championship.

Laursen, meanwhile, won both events held in Sweden in May and secured second place ahead of Magnus Caris and Marko Kantele by reaching the semi-finals of Event Eight.

The Dane has competed seven times in the World Championship over the past decade, reaching the last 32 on three occasions, while he is also a World Cup representative.

The South African representative at Alexandra Palace in December will be debutant Warrick Scheffer, who won the annual South African Masters event.

Scheffer, 23, defeated Clifford Stradling in the final after also overcoming former champion Charles Losper in the semi-finals.

The youngster was a quarter-finalist in last year's South African Masters, which was won by Nolan Arendse.

Ireland's Mick McGowan sealed his World Championship return by claiming a narrow 6-5 win over Tom Biggane in the final of the Tom Kirby Memorial Irish Matchplay.

McGowan - a two-time World Championship Qualifier during his previous spell on the PDC circuit - won through the event's early rounds in Tramore in September before edging out Biggane when the final was held at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin ahead of the World Grand Prix final.

Further qualifying events in October will see players from the Philippines and Southern Europe Qualify, with November seeing event in China, Japan, Australia, Germany, Central Europe and Eastern Europe ahead of the PDPA Qualifier.

The PDPA Qualifier will be held on Monday November 30 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. PDPA Members can now enter the PDPA Qualifier, costing £50, through the PDPA Website. Entries close at 2pm on Tuesday November 24. Entry is open to PDC Tour Card Holders and PDPA Associate Members who competed at Qualifying School.
