Littler has been announced as Athlete of the Year, whilst the 17-year-old sensation was also third on the People of the Year list behind Kate Middleton and Donald Trump.

Littler has enjoyed an incredible 12 months, reaching the World Darts Championship final in the New Year and enjoying a breakthrough season which has included wins in the Premier League, World Series of Darts Finals, Grand Slam of Darts and World Series events in Bahrain and Poland.

Littler's rise to prominence has also been recognised by his nominations for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year awards.

After receiving the award, Littler said: "It has been a crazy few months but I never expected to be the top trending athlete in Google Search this year.

"I'm really grateful for all the support people have given me and the growing interest in darts is amazing to see.

"I hope my journey inspires more young people into the sport."

Speaking on the Google 2024 Search trends, Matt Cooke from the Google News Initiative said:  “2024 has been a year of comebacks, curiosity, and community.

"Whether it’s fans reuniting for Oasis, young sports stars like Luke Littler making waves, or Brits voting in everything from elections to Eurovision, these searches show a nation full of passion and interest. It's amazing to see what captivated the UK."

Littler topped the Athletes category ahead of footballer Lamine Yamal and gymnast Simone Biles.

In the People list, Littler ranked third behind Kate Middleton and Donald Trump, but ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles in the top ten.
