Stunning Steve Wins West Family Test

STEVE WEST opened his HappyBet German Darts Championship campaign in style with a classy 6-0 win over his brother Tony on day one in Hildesheim.

It was the first time siblings have faced each other on the European Tour and it was younger brother Steve that tasted victory with a sensational performance.

The 41-year-old averaged 109.98 and hit an incredible seven maximums to see off his brother in emphatic style with one of the heaviest displays of scoring seen in the best-of-11 leg European Tour format.

The victory means that West will now face Stephen Bunting in the last 32 in Hildesheim on Saturday.

Former Austrian Darts Open champion Justin Pipe had to survive a match dart from Mickey Mansell before he claimed a 6-5 victory to book a place in the last 32 against Simon Whitlock.

Pipe hit five maximums and punished Mansell for missing tops in the deciding leg to move in to the next round.

Another former European Tour winner, Vincent van der Voort, suffered disappointment as he lost out 6-5 to Peter Hudson, who came back from 5-3 down to claim victory in the final leg.

The opening session of the HappyBet German Darts Championship concluded with Peter Hudson coming from 5-3 down to beat Vincent van der Voort in a last leg decider.

It looked as if the Dutchman was cruising in to round two as he moved in to a 5-3 lead but Hudson managed to level before punishing five missed match darts from van der Voort by finishing 80 on tops to set up a last 32 match with Dave Chisnall.

Mark Webster was superb as he saw off Mervyn King with a 6-2 victory.

The Welshman raced in to a 5-0 lead averaging 105. Webster then needed a further three legs to get the job done and ended with an average of 99.48.

Ted Evetts had a European Tour debut to remember as he beat Chris Dobey 6-2.

The young Englishman took a 5-0 lead before eventually getting over the line in the eighth leg, finishing with an average of 88.97 to move through to a meeting with Kim Huybrechts in the second round.

Cristo Reyes then came back from 3-0 and 5-3 down to beat Mark Walsh in a last leg decider.

Walsh was quickly in to his stride taking out two ton plus finishes in the first three legs to move in to a commanding lead, with the Spaniard fighting back before another break gave the former UK Open finalist a 5-3 cushion.

Reyes then managed to break back and take the game to a last leg decider, where he had to survive a match dart at the bull from Walsh before hitting double four to claim victory.

Andy Smith put together a string of four consecutive legs to seal his place in round two against Terry Jenkins.

With the match level at 2-2, Smith took control of the game and finished with an average of 92.25.

Rowby-John Rodriguez produced a very impressive display to beat Kyle Anderson 6-2.

The young Austrian hit six maximums and averaged 99.38 as he set up a second round tie with Jelle Klaasen.

A confident looking Kevin Painter secured a second round spot and a clash with Ian White as he beat Yordi Meeuwisse 6-3 with an average of 95.76.

Host Nation Qualifier Robert Allenstein kept home hopes alive as he survived a match dart to beat Steve Hine in a last leg decider.

The game swung both ways during a nervy encounter in front of a supportive German crowd.

Hine came from 4-2 behind to lead 5-4 before Allenstein pinned double 16 to take the game in to a deciding leg.

The Englishman missed tops to claim victory before the home favourite took out 97 to secure a spot in round two against Joe Cullen.

Earlier in the day, Robbie Green produced the performance of the opening session to set up a second round clash with Michael van Gerwen.

The 42-year-old averaged almost 100 as he beat Christian Kist - who averaged 98 in reply - 6-2.

The pair hit three maximums each but it was Green who claimed victory, hitting crucial doubles at the right time.

The tournament kicked off with Scott Taylor claiming his first ever win on the European Tour, as he saw off Andy Boulton 6-3, averaging 90 on his way to victory and hitting almost 50% of his attempts at a double.

Darren Johnson cruised in to the last 32 after a 6-1 victory over Janos Vegso.

Despite averaging less than his opponent, the Englishman was ruthless on the doubles by hitting almost 70% of his attempts, on his way to setting up a second round encounter with Mensur Suljovic.

Ron Meulenkamp was next to book his place in the last 32 as he defeated Marko Puls 6-3.

Meulenkamp raced in to a 3-0 lead before a minor comeback from Puls threatened to unsettle the Dutchman. However the 27-year-old had too much in the end though and will face Daryl Gurney in the next round.

The fifth match of the opening session saw David Pallett come through a scrappy encounter with Brendan Dolan.

The Englishman moved in to a 4-1 lead and had chances to make it 5-1 before Dolan closed the gap to 4-3 and he too had chances to level.

In the final leg Pallett, who hit five 180s in the match, missed the bull for a 170 finish but Dolan could not punish him as Pallet hit double eight to set up a clash with Gerwyn Price.

Left-hander Eddie Dootson will face the number two seed, Peter Wright in round two after beating Mike Holz 6-3, capitalising as the German qualifier managed to hit only 13% of his attempts at doubles.

The HappyBet German Darts Championship continues on Saturday with the second round across two sessions, starting from 1pm local time (12pm BST).
