ROSS SMITH and Graham Hall shared the spoils in the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour double-header held at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Saturday.
Smith, who clinched his second PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour win of the year, began his run to the £500 first prize with wins over Martin Walker and Mark Sidgwick.
The Kent-born thrower edged out Dan Butler with a narrow 4-3 victory before dismissing the exciting German Max Hopp by a 4-1 margin to reach the last eight.
Smith defeated Gaz Cousins 4-0 to reach the semi-finals, where he overcame the challenge of Adam Hunt with a 4-1 win to reach his second final in the space of as many events.
In the decider, Smith defeated the 20-year-old Dutchman Benito van de Pas by a 4-2 scoreline to become the first multiple winner on the Challenge Tour this year.
Van de Pas, competing on the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour for the first time since 2011, began his excellent run to the final with victories over Steve Haggerty and the emerging South African talent, Charl Pietersen.
The Dutchman, who has competed in the Lakeside World Championship on two occasions, edged out Paul Barham in a deciding-leg before recording a brace of 4-2 victories over Alan Bell and Jack Hill to reach the last four.
Van de Pas enjoyed another 4-2 win over Scotsman Richard Baillie to reach the final, before having to settle for the £300 runner’s-up prize as he found Smith too much to handle.
Smith’s good form continued in the second event of the day as he secured victories over Nick Paenen, Jack Hill, Alex Long and a 4-3 win over Tom Sykes to reach the last 16 stage.
Smith then saw off Max Hopp 4-1 for the second time in the day, and hopes of a superb double where ignited as wins over Matthew Dennant and Kent rival Lewis McGurn, sealed a place in a third consecutive Challenge Tour final.
However, Smith was denied a double victory on the day, as he lost a deciding-leg to Warwickshire’s Graham Hall, who enjoyed his best ever performance on PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour, to date.
Hall, 23, put the disappointment of a first round exit in the day’s opening event behind him, with a trio of 4-1 victories over Kirsty Hutchinson, Brandonn Monk and Brandon Walsh.
Hall’s run to his first final continued with a 4-2 win over Shaun Littler before defeating the Dutch duo of John De Kruijf and Jan Dekker by the same scoreline to reach the final.
In the decider, the 23-year-old edged out the excellent Smith in a dramatic deciding leg to record a brilliant first victory on the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour and with it the £500 first prize.
Former Lakeside World Championship semi-finalist Dekker was competing in the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour for the first time, and after a first round exit in the day’s opening event , the 22-year-old from Holland recovered well as he put together good performances in the second tournament, reaching the last four and taking away £200 in prize money for his efforts.
The weeekend's action at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, in Wigan, concludes with one further £3,000 event to be played on Sunday.
