MICHAEL VAN GERWEN completed back-to-back Players Championship triumphs with another stunning success at the Barnsley Metrodome as he overcame James Wilson 6-3 in Wednesday's final.
The Dutchman had claimed his 17th tournament victory of 2016 in Tuesday's £75,000 tournament, and won his fifth successive event 24 hours later to continue his amazing form.
Van Gerwen's early wins over Mike De Decker and Alan Tabern before whitewashing Jason Lovett in the third round, and he then landed a nine-dart finish as he overcame Simon Whitlock and overcame Robert Thornton - in a repeat of the 2015 World Grand Prix final - as he reached the semi-finals.
There, he overcame young Belgian Dimitri Van den Bergh 6-3 before repeating the scoreline in the final against Wilson, who shared the opening six legs before seeing the 27-year-old pull clear.
Van Gerwen followed another hold of throw to lead 4-3 with a superb break of throw as he landed a 180 and then finished 108 to move two legs clear, before punishing two misses from the Yorkshireman in the next to secure victory.
The win means that van Gerwen has now matched the tally of 18 tournament wins which he achieved during 2015, and he has now won 48 of his last 50 matches.
Wilson's run to his first PDC final continued his superb recent form, having reached three semi-finals and a quarter-final on the circuit recently.
The 44-year old saw off Steve Hine, James Richardson, Steve West and the Dutch trio of Vincent van der Voort, Raymond van Barneveld and Jermaine Wattimena on his way to the decider, collecting £6,000 in prize money in the process.
Van den Bergh, a six-time winner on the PDC Unicorn Development and Challenge Tours, enjoyed his best-ever run on the ProTour as he battled past Devon Petersen, Jan Dekker, Ronny Huybrechts, Chris Dobey and Cristo Reyes.
Dutchman Wattimena also won through to his first PDC semi-final as he defeated Jonny Clayton, David Pallett, Peter Wright, Simon Stevenson and Jelle Klaasen.
Five-time World Champion van Barneveld was joined by Thornton, Klaasen and Reyes in the quarter-finals, while 2016 Players Championship winners Stephen Bunting and Dave Chisnall were amongst the players to reach the last 16.
The day also featured a nine-dart finish from another Dutchman, Jeffrey de Graaf, who achieved a perfect leg in the second round against Chris Dobey before going on to lose out narrowly
The Players Championship treble-header concludes on Thursday, with action to be streamed live at www.LIVEPDC.TV throughout the event with play from two boards simultaneously being covered.
