WES NEWTON booked his place in the Winners Group of Championship League Darts with a comprehensive 6-1 win over Co Stompe in the Group Five final on Wednesday.
Newton, the world number 20, entered the internet-streamed tournament in Group Five and produced a fine display in the play-offs to take victory.
Having won four of his seven league games in the round-robin phase, Newton found himself fourth in the table on leg difference, but routed league leader Adrian Lewis 6-1 in the semis.
Newton led 3-0 as Lewis, for the second successive day, paid for a slow start to the semis before the Fleetwood ace took the win.
He then came from a leg down against Stompe to reel off six in a row in the final, taking two breaks of throw in establishing a 4-1 lead before sealing victory with finishes of 116 and 118.
Newton now progresses to October's big-money Winners Group alongside Phil Taylor, Simon Whitlock, Alan Tabern and James Wade, with a £10,000 first prize on offer alongside places in the Grand Slam of Darts for the finalists.
"I'm really pleased to have won through to the Winners Group at the first attempt," said Newton. "I felt fresh coming into the day and, after losing my first game, I felt I played well throughout the league stage.
"In the semis and final my opponents didn't play as well as they had earlier on, but all I could concentrate on was my own game and I'm delighted with how I played.
"I can look forward to the Winners Group now and I know that there's a place in the Grand Slam up for grabs too, but most of all I'd love to win this title."
Stompe will now return on Thursday to compete in a fifth successive group, having entered in Group Two after Mervyn King withdrew through injury.
Lewis will continue an ever-present record this year, having finished top of the league table for a second successive day with five wins from his seven league games only to fall in the play-offs.
Veteran two-time World Champion Dennis Priestley missed out on a play-off place on leg difference having won four games - the same as Stompe, Newton and the other semi-final loser Wayne Jones, who went down 6-3 to Stompe.
Vincent van der Voort avoided elimination in dramatic circumstances in the final round of games, hitting finishes of 139, 111, 153 and 164 in a win over Stompe to end Gary Anderson's hopes in the event.
Kevin Painter also drops out of the competition, having won just one of his seven matches, while former World Champions Steve Beaton and Jelle Klaasen are joined by Jamie Caven in entering for Group Six.

First Round of Matches
Adrian Lewis began Group Five with a 6-4 defeat of Gary Anderson. Lewis took out a 124 finish to lead 2-1, before Anderson hit two 180s in taking the fourth, while they exchanged finishes of 70 and 66 in the next two. The seventh and eighth also went with throw before Lewis finished 86 in two darts for a 5-4 lead and punished misses from Anderson to wrap up the win on double eight.
Wayne Jones' bid in the 2010 Championship League Darts began in fine style with a 6-2 win against Wes Newton. Jones took a 3-0 lead thanks to a trio of double 18 finishes, before Newton won the fourth and then landed a 167 finish to pull back to 3-2. Jones, though, kicked off the sixth with a 180 before double six restored his advantage, double two and double 16 sealed victory.
Group Four runner-up Dennis Priestley held off Vincent van der Voort's fightback to edge a 6-5 win. Priestley made a fine start to lead 3-0, and after van der Voort won the fourth, two more legs put the veteran 5-1 up. However, a missed double 16 for the match allowed the Dutchman to take out 96 to stay in the game, and three more winning legs forced a decider. Van der Voort opened the 11th with a 180, but Priestley hit a 140 to leave 40 before double top sealed the win.
Kevin Painter made a strong start to Group Five, seeing off Co Stompe 6-3. Stompe took the opener, but Painter replied with checkouts of 160 and 110 to lead, although the Dutchman hit 180s in the next two to edge back in front at 3-2. Double top from Painter saw him level, and after Stompe missed the bull in the seventh he took out 96 for a 4-3 lead, double to edge towards victory and double six for the match.
Second Round of Matches.
Wes Newton picked up his first win of the day, defeating Adrian Lewis 6-4. Although Lewis won the opening leg, Newton took the next three to take command, hitting two 180s in the process. Lewis replied with a 12-darter before the duo traded the next four to leave Newton 5-4 up, and he hit a 180 and double eight to seal the win.
Vincent van der Voort bounced back from his loss to Dennis Priestley with a 6-3 win against Kevin Painter. After Painter took out 99 for the first leg, a brace of double top finishes edged the Dutchman in front. Painter pulled back to three-all, but a 180 in a second successive leg from van der Voort helped him to the seventh, he broke throw in the eighth and landed two maximums and double ten in sealing the win.
Wayne Jones maintained his winning start with a 6-1 romp against Gary Anderson. Anderson missed three darts to win the first leg, allowing Jones back for double eight before the Wolverhampton man finished double 16 and double 18 to lead 3-0. Anderson took the fourth, but Jones restored his lead before punishing a missed double top to lead 5-1 and sealed the win on tops.
Co Stompe avenged Tuesday's semi-final defeat to Dennis Priestley with a 6-5 win over the Yorkshireman. Priestley took out 120 for the first leg and also won the next two to lead 3-0. Stompe pulled back to 3-2 and shared the next two legs before double ten put Priestley a leg away from the win. However, six missed match darts in the next allowed Stompe to keep the game alive, and he took out 81 on the bull to force a decider. Stompe was first to a finish, missing double 11, but when Priestley pulled his dart at double eight for a 136 finish into the single 16 - bursting his score - the Dutchman returned to seal the win with his third dart at double 11.
Third Round of Matches
Wes Newton won a second successive game, defeating Kevin Painter 6-3. While the pair shared the opening four legs, Newton landed a 180 in taking the fifth and punished Painter's two missed doubles for a 76 finish in breaking for a 4-2 lead. Painter stepped in to take the seventh, but a 136 finish put Newton 5-3 up, and he sealed the win on double eight.
Adrian Lewis found top gear to defeat Vincent van der Voort 6-3 and claim a second win of Group Five. The duo traded the first two before Lewis took out 136 and 65 to lead 3-1, before the Dutchman hit back to level. Lewis, though, finished superbly to check out 88, 97 - with single 19, double 19 and double top - before landing a 180 and double top to seal the win.
Co Stompe hit back from 4-3 down to win 6-4 against Wayne Jones, who suffers his first loss of Group Five. The first four legs were shared before Jones took out 145 to lead 3-2. Stompe levelled but Jones took the seventh to edge 4-3 up, only for Stompe to finish the stronger. He hit a 177 in the eighth as he levelled, double top in the ninth and left double 16 with a 180 in wrapping up victory.
Dennis Priestley inflicted a third successive loss on Gary Anderson as he took a 6-4 victory. Priestley hit seven perfect darts on his way to the first leg, but Anderson replied with a 126 finish before winning the third to lead 2-1. Priestley, though, took the next three to lead 4-2 before Anderson regained his range on the doubles to land double ten for the seventh to trail 4-3. Priestley hit a 180 in the eighth, while Anderson finished 69 to stay in the game at 5-4, but double top sealed the veteran's win.
Fourth Round of Matches
Adrian Lewis picked up his third win of the day, defeating Kevin Painter 6-4. Lewis, with the aid of throw, held the early advantage as the opening six legs were shared, before he took the seventh for a 4-3 advantage. Painter finished 133 for the eighth, but Lewis posted double 14 for a 5-4 lead and took the only break of throw with an 87 finish to seal the win.
Wes Newton held off Vincent van der Voort's comeback to sneak a 6-5 win in their clash. After the duo traded 81 finishes in the first two legs, Newton tok the next three without reply to lead 4-1. He also led 5-2 before finishes of 106, 75 and double 16 from the Dutchman saw him force a deciding leg. A 180 from Newton pushed him clear, and he finished double eight to take the points.
Co Stompe denied Gary Anderson his first win of Group Five with a dramatic final-leg victory. The opening six legs all went against the throw, including a 112 finish from Stompe, before the Dutchman hit a 180 in the seventh as he led for the first time. Anderson hit back on double top, but failed to leave a double in the next as Stompe landed tops for a 5-4 cushion. Anderson hit a 180 and double ten to force a deciding leg, and scores of 180 and 140 left him 86 after nine darts - only for him to miss a second single 18 to leave the bullseye, allowing Stompe back in to take the win on double four.
Wayne Jones sneaked past Dennis Priestley to win his third game of the day. The Wolverhampton man made a fine start to lead 4-1, before a 170 from Priestley sparked his comeback as he won three successive legs to leve. Jones took out 87 on the bull to punish two misses at double 12 from the veteran in the next, although the European Championship finalist missed two match darts in the tenth as Priestley forced a decider. Jones hit a 180 but missed the bull, only for Priestley to see his chance go begging as he missed double top and two darts at double ten, and Jones returned to hit double eight for the win.
Fifth Round of Matches
Wayne Jones semi-final hopes were boosted by a fine comeback from 3-0 down to win 6-3 against Kevin Painter. Painter made a fine start with scores of 140, 180 and 170 in taking the opening leg inside 12 darts, and added a break of throw and the third leg for a three leg lead. Jones got off the mark with a 121 finish, and punished ten misses from his opponent in the fifth to land double 18. After levelling, another double 18 finish put Jones 4-3 up, double eight gave him a fifth leg and a 105 finish saw him complete the win, with Painter missing further doubles in the last two legs.
Adrian Lewis moved towards another play-off spot with a 6-2 win over Dennis Priestley. Priestley took the game's first two legs on double top, but a 112 finish fired Lewis' challenge. After Priestley missed two darts for the fourth the youngster levelled, then landed double top for a 3-2 lead and an 85 finish for a fourth leg. He took the seventh and then sealed the win with an 87 checkout.
Gary Anderson picked up his first win of Group Five, storming to a 6-2 win against Vincent van der Voort. Anderson had lost his first four games but came out fired up against the Dutchman, hitting a 180 in taking the first leg, a 102 finish to break in the second and successive double top finishes to lead 4-0. Van der Voort broke in the fifth and landed double four to halve the gap, but a brilliant 148 checkout gave Anderson a 5-2 cushion and double eight sealed the win.
Wes Newton sneaked past Co Stompe 6-5 in a thrilling final-leg decider, in which the Fleetwood ace also missed double 12 for a nine-darter. Stompe edged the early exchanges, with a 170 finish putting him 2-1 up and double eight moving him two legs clear. Newton opened the fifth with scores of 180 and 140, with double 16 cutting the gap to 3-2, before he landed back-to-back maximums in the sixth, which he followed up with treble 20 and treble 19 before missing double 12 for a nine-dart finish. He landed double six for a ten-darter, and shared the next four as a high-quality contest went into a decider. Stompe hit a 180 in the 11th leg, but missed darts at double top, ten and five before Newton scrambled in double eight to claim victory.
Sixth Round of Matches
Dennis Priestley came through another 11-leg battle, defeating Wes Newton to maintain his play-off hopes. Newton kicked off the game with a 180 and took the first leg, and after Priestley levelled a 136 finish, followed by double one in the fourth, put him 3-1 up. Priestley took two of the next three to cut the gap to 4-3, before a 100 finish pushed Newton to the brink of victory. Double top kept Priestley in the game, a 135 bull finish forced a decider and he took the 11th with a 14-darter to grab the points.
Gary Anderson picked up what could be a crucial win with a 6-3 defeat of Kevin Painter, who was sent to the foot of the table thanks to a fifth loss. After Painter took the opening leg, Anderson won the next three, including a 76 finish to break in the third, for a 3-1 cushion. Painter shared the next four but could not break, before a missed double five for a 90 finish in the ninth allowed Anderson to wrap up only his second win of the day on double top.
Vincent van der Voort kept alive his hopes of remaining in the tournament with a crushing 6-1 defeat of Wayne Jones. The Dutchman opened the game with a 180, and after sneaking the first leg on double one he took the next three, including two breaks of throw, for a 4-0 lead. He hit another maximum in winning the fifth before Jones punished three missed match darts with double 16 to avoid a whitewash, although van der Voort landed another maximum and double eight to complete the win in the next.
Co Stompe produced the day's first whitewash with a rout of Adrian Lewis as the Dutchman moved top of the table. Lewis was never in the game after Stompe punished a slow start with three successive legs before hitting a 171 and a 94 finish to break for a second time and lead 4-0. A 112 finish moved him five legs clear, and double eight sealed the whitewash.
Final Round of Matches
Adrian Lewis edged past Wayne Jones 6-5 to claim a fifth win of the group phase, although both players progress to compete in the semi-finals. Lewis came from 2-0 down to lead 4-2, including finishes of 87 and 104 as he pushed ahead, only for Jones to take out 80 on the bull and double eight to level. Lewis won the ninth, but was waiting on 110 after a 180 in the next as Jones checked out 101 on double 12 to force a decider. But the Stoke man was too strong, and landed double eight for the win.
Dennis Priestley maintained his outside semi-final chances with a 6-5 win over Kevin Painter, who is eliminated by the defeat. Priestley came from a leg down to lead 3-1 before Painter battled back to level. Double 16 and a 101 checkout put the 60-year-old 5-3 up, but Painter took out 71 and then hit a 177 and double 16 in the tenth to force a decider. However, Priestley edged in front and was first to a finish, missing the bullseye for a 170 but taking out double eight on his return.
Vincent van der Voort ensured that he would avoid elimination in Group Five, hitting FOUR ton-plus finishes in a 6-2 win over Co Stompe. Van der Voort had to perform better than Gary Anderson to earn a Group Six spot, and began in stunning fashion with finishes of 139, 111 and 153 to lead 3-0. Stompe took out 95 on the bull to get off the mark and landed a 180 and double ten for the fifth leg. But van der Voort took double eight for a fourth leg, a 164 checkout to lead 5-2 and double top - after missing the same bed for a 157 finish - to seal the win.
Gary Anderson defeated Wes Newton 6-4, but is still eliminated from the event on leg difference to Vincent van der Voort, while Newton edges a semi-final spot ahead of Dennis Priestley. Anderson started in fine fashion to take the opening three legs without reply before Newton, fired by back-to-back 180s in the fourth, landed double ten to get off the mark. Finishes of 62 and 106 saw him level, and double 16 put him in front. But double five saw the Scot draw back level, and finishes of 72 and double top gave him a final victory, albeit in vain.
Semi-Finals - 6.45pm
Adrian Lewis crashed out in the semi-finals for the second successive day, losing 6-1 to Wes Newton. Lewis went down 6-4 to James Wade, and again paid for a poor start, with Newton racing into a 3-0 lead, with a an 84 checkout sandwiched between a brace of double 16 finishes. Lewis posted a second 180 of the game in taking the fourth leg to get off the mark, but double four restored Newton's lead, and he took the next two to seal a heavy win.
Co Stompe won through to the Group Five final, defeating Wayne Jones 6-3. Stompe made a fine start by hitting a 180 and double five in the first leg and taking out 86 on the bull to break for a 2-0 lead. Double eight got Jones onto the scoreboard, but Stompe won the next two for a 4-1 lead. Jones took two of the next three either side of a 70 finish from Stompe, who landed a 177 and double 16 to book his place in the final.
