Barney Sets Sights On UK Open Crown

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD has set his sights on glory at the Budweiser UK Open, following his semi-final exit in the Holsten Premier League Darts.

The Dutchman was odds-on to win through to the final of the Premier League last Monday, after losing just one of his 12 league matches.

However, he lost 11-3 to a brilliant showing from compatriot Roland Scholten in Plymouth.

After playing in the Premier League and International Darts League, as well as on the PDC circuit in recent months, van Barneveld is now enjoying a break before stepping up his preparations for the UK Open in Bolton.

"The Topic IDL was tough, playing every day for nine days, and I played in a couple of other events in Holland," said van Barneveld.

"I need a rest for about a week now, and then I will pick up my darts again and prepare for Bolton.

"I won a Regional Final to get there and I would love to take the trophy next weekend."

After defeating Scholten 8-3 in both league games during the Premier League's first phase, and also winning 7-1 when they met in the IDL, few expected van Barneveld to crash to defeat in Plymouth.

The Dutchman added: "I've beaten Roland two times in the league but it was 0-0 going up there and you saw what can happen.

"I made some mistakes and I wasn't on top form. I could probably write a book about this game - I've had 23 years in darts and still don't understand it!

"I've enjoyed every single minute of the Premier League until that night.

"I've hit a nine-darter, had some great wins and a couple of good games against Phil Taylor.

"But it's all about winning. I want to win every tournament I take part in and it's disappointing."
