TAHUNA IRWIN has spoken of his ambitions as he prepares for his big-stage debut at the Auckland Darts Masters, presented by TAB & Burger King.
Irwin, a 21-year-old from Gisborne, will take his first steps into the sport's limelight when he competes in the World Series of Darts event at the Trusts Arena this weekend.
However, the DartPlayers New Zealand prospect has also qualified for the PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship and William Hill World Darts Championship later this year.
He may also look to follow in the footsteps of fellow countryman Cody Harris, who has been competing on the PDC circuit this year, in a bid to become a superstar of the sport.
"I'm aiming to be number one in the world, because I want to do good - for my town, my family and New Zealand," Irwin told Newshub.
"You have to set yourself a goal. If you want it, you'll go for it and that's what I'm trying to do."
Irwin's qualification for the World Championship came during a memorable week where he sealed his spots in Auckland and the World Youth Championship.
"It was overwhelming," he added. "It took me a couple of weeks for it to sink in and realise that this is a big thing.
"All my family is proud. Depending on how well I do, this could be a good set-up for the rest of my life."
Tickets for the Auckland Darts Masters - which will be held from August 3-5 at the Trusts Arena - are available through www.ticketek.co.nz.
