JAN DEKKER battled his way to a 3-1 victory over Lisa Ashton in round one of the 2018/19 William Hill World Darts Championship.
Four-time Lakeside Women's Champion Ashton, who received a strong backing from the crown on her impressive Alexandra Palace debut, got off to the best start possible, averaging over 106 to take the opening set 3-0.
Dutchman Dekker raced through the second set without dropping a leg to level the match, and with the third set tied at 2-2 Dekker found a crucial double top to open up a 2-1 lead.
Ashton continued to fight to the end but Dekker produced a strong final set to claim victory, and he will now take on Mervyn King in round two.
“I had to work really hard there, I’m relieved to be through.”
