JARKKO KOMULA 4-3 ROMAN KONCHIKOV
JARKKO KOMULA booked a first round clash against Wes Newton after defeating Roman Konchikov at the preliminary round stage of the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

The Finnish player started the match confidently by hitting a 180 in the first leg and winning it with a 69 finish.

Komula had chances to take a 2-0 lead, but he missed one dart at double 16 and Konchikov hit an excellent two-dart 90 finish to level.

Komula regained the lead by winning the third leg, but missed a number of chances in the next and Konchikov squared the game for a second time.

Komula held throw to win the fifth leg, but wasted two opportunities to win the match and the Russian, who defeated Anastasia Dobromyslova to qualify for the televised stages, landed double 14 to take the game the full distance.

But the Finnish player managed to hold his throw for a fourth time in the deciding leg hitting a 70 finish to seal the win.

STEVE HINE 3-2 ROLAND SCHOLTEN
(1-3, 3-1, 2-3, 3-1, 3-0)
STEVE HINE came from 2-1 down to defeat Roland Scholten in the first round of the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace.

Scholten, who suffered a first round defeat at last year's event to Carlos Rodriguez, became the third seed to fall in this year's competition.

Both players started the game in confident mood, as Scholten held throw with a 116 checkout and Hine replied with an 86 finish.

Scholten hit a 13-darter to take the third leg and then won the next, which included his second maximum of the contest, to win the set.

The Dutchman, who has struggled with a shoulder injury should have won the opening leg of the second set, but a host of missed doubles were costly and Hine managed to pinch it on double seven.

Hine doubled his lead with a two-dart 100 finish, before Scholten managed to take the third leg.

But the man from Coventry held throw in the fourth leg by hitting double eight to square the game.

Hine held a 2-1 advantage in the third set but it was Scholten who regained the lead after recording a two-dart 54 finish in the fourth leg, and then hitting double nine in the fifth to take the set.

The disappointment of losing the third set didn't appear to get Hine as broke throw at the start of the fourth and quickly doubled his advantage.

Hine had chances to win the set in third leg, but the attempts at doubles went begging and Scholten stepped in to hit double seven to keep the set alive.

But Hine managed to take the game into a deciding set by hiting a pressure double top with his last dart, with Scholten waiting on a double.

Hine took the early advantage in the final set after he moved into a 2-0 lead.

Scholten had chances to keep the game alive in the third leg, but the three attempts at doubles were off-target and Hine hit double top to book a last 32 clash against Phil Taylor.

CO STOMPE 3-1 STEVE MAISH
(3-2, 1-3, 3-1, 3-0)
CO STOMPE came out on top against Steve Maish with a 3-1 victory in the first round the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

The match was evenly poised at one set all before Stompe won six of the next seven legs played to win the match.

Both players endured a nervy start to the match missing numerous doubles in the opening leg, but Stompe landed double two to break throw.

Maish hit a fabulous 136 checkout to take the second leg and then won the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Stompe took the fourth leg, before Maish hit a maximum in the deciding leg. The Essex man had a chance to take the set, but his attempt at double 12 was off-target, and the Dutchman made him pay by pinching it on double top.

Maish hit back by winning the opening two legs of the second set, but he allowed Stompe to take the third leg after missing chances to win the set.

However, he made no mistake in the next leg as he hit double six to square the game at one-all.

At the start of third set Stompe broke his opponent's throw after Maish missed a chance at double 16.

Stompe soon doubled that lead before Maish won the third leg by hitting double eight.

But the Dutchman, who reached the quarter-finals of last year's event, won the fourth leg to regain the lead.

The frustration started to show in Maish and Stompe quickly established a 2-0 lead in the fourth set and go one leg away from the match.

And he closed out the game in the next leg, by hitting double 10 for the second time in the set to book a last 32 clash against Mervyn King or Matt Clark.

KIRK SHEPHERD 3-0 SCOTT BURNETT
(3-1, 3-1, 3-0)
KIRK SHEPHERD enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory over American Scott Burnett at the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Shepherd, a finalist at this event two years ago, could potentially play John Part in the second round in a repeat of the 2008 final.

The Birmingham-based player started the game well winning the opening leg of the match, which included a maximum.

Burnett hit back by taking the second with an excellent 154 finish before Shepherd regained the lead with a 13-dart finish which featured another maximum.

Shepherd then won the set in the fourth leg after both players were guilty of missing a number of opportunities at the doubles to win it.

The Californinan took the opening leg of the second set with an excellent 125 checkout, but Shepherd landed another 180 in taking the second leg, and then broke throw to win the third.

Burnett hit a maximum in the fourth leg but it was not enough as Shepherd recorded a two-dart 65 finish to move two sets ahead.

Shepherd kept up the momentum in the third set, hitting his fourth 180 of the game in the second leg to go one away from victory.

And the American's hopes were ended in the next leg as Shepherd hit double top to win the match.

WES NEWTON 3-0 JARKKO KOMULA
(3-0, 3-2, 3-2)
WES NEWTON defeated Finland's Jarkko Komula in straight sets to book a place in the last 32 of the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Newton broke his opponent's throw in the second leg to build a 2-0 lead and then wrapped up the opening set in the next by hitting double eight.

Komula, who defeated Roman Konchikov earlier in the day, won his first leg of the match after Newton was guilty of two missed darts at doubles.

Newton quickly levelled and followed that by hitting the first 180 of the match in third leg, but wasted two darts at double top and Komula stepped in for a 2-1 lead.

The Lancastrian managed to hold throw in the fourth leg and then secured a vital break of throw in the deciding leg for a two sets lead after Komula missed a dart at double 16 for a 152 finish.

Newton, who claimed his first Players Championship victory a month ago, hit a 111 checkout to kick off the third set, but Komula held throw in the second to level.

Newton won the third leg to go one away from victory, but failed to close the game out in the fourth when he missed two darts at double top, and Komula stepped in to hit the same double.

In the deciding leg, Komula missed one dart at double to take the set and keep the match alive, and this time Newton made no mistake and hit double 20 to seal victory.

After the match Newton said: 'It's the biggest tournament in the world and it can feel intimidating up there.

'In the past i've possibly practised too hard before coming into this event as it means so much. But i've been playing really well recently I felt relaxed today.'

EVENING SESSION

MERVYN KING 3-0 MATT CLARK
(3-2, 3-0, 3-0)
MERVYN KING put in a strong display to end the challenge of Matt Clark with a 3-0 triumph at the Alexandra Palace.

King, seeded fifth for this year's event, won eight consecutive legs in powering to victory and ended the match with a pleasing three-dart average of 97.

Clark led the opening set 2-1 thanks to a 13-dart finish to level at 1-1 and then a break of throw in the third.

But King mangaed to win the next two legs by taking out finishes of 104 and 84, on the bull, to take a 1-0 lead.

King continued that form to take the second set without reply, taking the first leg with a 126 checkout and following that with two 13-dart finishes.

Clark could not keep up with the pace his opponent was setting and King took the opening two legs of the third set, which included a 95 finish to move one away from the match.

And last year's semi-finalist wrapped up the match in the third leg by hitting double 15 to set up a second round clash with Co Stompe.

After the match King revealed: "I did feel a few nerves coming out tonight, but once I won the first set I felt fine and really found my rhythm.

"Obviously it would be a dream come true to win this event. If I can turn up and play my A Game, I can beat anybody."

AODHAGAN O'NEILL 4-2 LES FRANCIS
IRISHMAN Aodhaghan O'Neill produced an impressive performance to end the hopes of South African Les Francis in their preliminary round contest.

Francis had a chance to lead 3-2 but wasted the opportunity, and that proved to be costly in the final outcome as O'Neill took the final two legs.

Both players showed a few nerves in the opening leg on their World Championship debut, but Francis managed to land double eight for an early lead.

The Irishman hit back by taking the next two legs before Francis levelled by hitting double top.

O'Neill, who hails from Ballyconnell, took the lead for a second time when he converted a two-dart 60 finish.

The 50-year-old then produced an excellent 14-dart finish to complete the win and set-up a first round tie with Adrian Lewis.

BARRIE BATES 3-1 JELLE KLAASEN
(1-3, 3-2, 3-0, 3-2)
BARRIE BATES upset the form book with a tremendous first round victory over Jelle Klaasen at the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

The Welshman, who enjoyed an excellent run to the quarter-finals in the last year's world championship, will now take on Kevin McDine for a place in the last 16.

Klaasen started the match well, hitting a 180 in the process of winning the opening leg.

Bates soon levelled, but the Dutchman won the next two legs - breaking throw in the fourth by landing double nine for a 1-0 lead.

The Welshman hit back quickly by taking the opening two legs of the second set.

Klaasen produced a 12-dart finish to win the third after Bates had a dart to win the set, and the Dutchman then won the fourth by landing double nine for the third time in the game.

The deciding leg of the set proved pivotal in the outcome of the match as both missed seven darts to win the set, and  it was Bates who won it by hitting double one.

Bates won the third set in quick style by taking three legs without reply, which included a 13 darter and brilliant 144 checkout.

The Welshman then kept the winning run of legs going by winning the first two legs of the fourth set.

Klaasen kept his hopes alive by winning the third and fourth legs, after Bates missed a dart in each leg to win the match.

In the deciding leg Klaasen landed a maximum, but Bates produced a fantastic 135 checkout on the bullseye to win the contest in dramatic fashion.

A delighted Bates said after the match: "It feels unbelivable to win. Jelle is a tremendous player.

"The crowd were fantastic and really got behind me. It felt like half of Wales were in here tonight!"

ADRIAN LEWIS 3-0 AODHAGAN O'NEILL
(3-1, 3-0, 3-0)
ADRIAN LEWIS stormed into the second round of the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship with a 3-0 demolition of Irish qualifier Aodhahan O'Neill.

O'Neill, who defeated Les Francis 4-2 to reach the first round earlier in the evening, was not able to get into his stride as Lewis recorded victory in only 26 minutes.

Lewis hit six maximums in the contest with a fantastic three-dart of 106.51 - the best in the tournament so far.

After the game Lewis said: "I saw Aodhagan play his match earlier, and I knew I had to perform.

"I want to play Phil Taylor in the quarters. I played him a couple of weeks ago in Germany and averaged 108 to his 107. It was a quality game and I feel I can beat him this year."

Lewis won the opening leg in impressive fashion hitting his first 180 of the game with his opening three darts, but missed four darts at doubles to break throw in the next, allowing the Irishman to level.

But the Stoke youngster won the third leg and followed that up with a 15-dart finish to wrap up the opening set.

Lewis stepped up the pace in the second set, hitting two 12-darters at the start of the set, which included finishes of 106 and 96.

The world number eight then won set in the next leg with a 13-dart finish, before hitting two more 13-darters at the start of the third set.

That put him one leg away from victory and that was quickly recorded with a clinical 122 finish to seal last a second round clash against Wes Newton.

PETER MANLEY 3-2 ANDY JENKINS
(3-0, 1-3, 2-3, 3-1, 3-0)
PETER MANLEY came through a see-saw five-set encounter at the 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship with a 3-2 win over Andy Jenkins.

Portsmouth's Jenkins had led 2-1 but Manley managed to produce the goods when it mattered to advance by taking six successive legs in the final two sets.

Manley started the match well, winning the opening leg and then breaking throw in the next with a two-dart 60 finish.

The Cumbria based thrower then wrapped up the first set in style with a 127 checkout on the bullseye.

Manley should have continued the winning run of legs at the start of the second set, but three missed chances at double 18 allowed Jenkins to nick it.

Manley levelled with a 98 finish, but Jenkins took the next two legs to level the match.

The three-time World Championship finalist established a 2-1 lead in the third set and had two darts to win the set in the fourth, but those attempts were off-target and Jenkins took the set into a decider.

The same fate hit Manley again the fifth leg as he missed four chances to take the set and Jenkins hit double eight to take a set he seemed unlikely to win and lead for the first time.

Jenkins won the first leg of the fourth set and had chances to make it 2-0, but missed doubles proved costly and Manley levelled at 1-1.

Manley then hit double 16 to break Jenkins' throw and won the set in the next, hitting double top after Jenkins missed five darts at double 10.

Manley held throw at the start of the final set and then broke throw with a 15-dart finish to go 2-0 ahead.

Jenkins missed a dart at double 10 once again in the third leg and Manley made his opponent pay by converting a 120 checkout, landing his favourite double top for the third leg in succession to win the match.

After the match Manley admitted: "It's always hard playing a good friend and that was incredibly tough tonight.

"I've been looking at old tapes to try and re-discover my old form. I know I have to put the work in if I am going to rise back up the rankings."
