Michael Smith was in electrifying form as he beat Adrian Lewis to win the fifth Coral UK Open Qualifier in Wigan on Saturday.
The 24-year-old saw off stiff competition throughout the day before beating a similarly impressive Adrian Lewis 6-5 in the final at the Robin Park Tennis Centre to claim a fourth PDC career title.
The day also saw Michael van Gerwen’s sensational 31-game winning run ended by Terry Jenkins as the Bull ran out a 6-3 victor over the world number one in the Last 16.
After receiving a first round bye, Smith comfortably saw off Stephen Carrett and Kevin Thomas to win his board before beating Mark Webster, who had continued his good form on the day, 6-2 in the Last 32.
A second successive 6-2 win followed against an improved Simon Whitlock in the Last 16, before Smith made hard work of Vincent van der Voort in the quarter-finals. Having led 5-0, Smith let the Dutchman bring the game back to 5-4 before he stopped the rot and took out 67 to book his place in the semi-finals.
Daryl Gurney, who had enjoyed a fantastic day on the oche and was appearing in the first PDC semi-final, was Smith’s last four opponent, however the Bully Boy would make like work of the Northern Irish thrower, running out a comfortable 6-2 victor to reach the final.
Lewis began the day in stunning fashion as he dropped just three legs in his first four matches in Wigan, including three whitewash wins against Prakash Jiwa, Mark Jones and Aaron Turner, to reach the quarter-finals.
Having drawn 6-6 to Kim Huybrechts at the Betway Premier League in Liverpool on Thursday, Lewis made amends as he defeated the Belgian 6-4 to set up a semi-final with the day’s other surprise package, Eddie Dootson.
Dootson, who secured his PDC Tour Card at Qualifying School in January, stunned the field to reach his first PDC semi-final, before just falling short to Lewis in the semis as Jackpot secured another 6-4 win.
And Smith and Lewis’ form would not dessert them in the final as the pair exchanged blows in a closely contested final.
With the game going with throw at 4-4, Smith looked to have stolen the advantage as he took out 127 to break the throw and move 5-4 ahead. However, Lewis was not prepared to go down without a fight as he responded with a ton-plus checkout of his own to break straight back, taking out 118.
And with the darts in his hand it looked as if Lewis was about to snatch the win, however he failed to take out 58 and Smith returned to hit double six and seal the £10,000 winner’s cheque and a third PDC ProTour crown.
