Unibet Sponsors European Championship

UNIBET SIGNS UP FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP SPONSORSHIP

UNIBET have extended their partnership with the Professional Darts Corporation by following their backing of The Unibet Masters by signing a two-year agreement as title sponsors of the Unibet European Championship.

The eighth staging of the European Championship will see the first major PDC tournament staged in Belgium as the Ethias Arena in Hasselt hosts the ITV-televised event.

The £300,000 tournament will kick off with the first round being held across two sessions on Friday October 30, as the 32 players begin their challenge for the £65,000 title.

Saturday October 31 will see the second round played across two sessions, with Sunday's Finals Day seeing the afternoon's quarter-finals followed by the semi-finals and final in the evening session.

The Unibet European Championship runs alongside the leading online gaming company's successful sponsorship of The Unibet Masters.

Unibet Country Manager Phillip Manzi said: "We are delighted to extend our relationship with the PDC by sponsoring the European Championship and take our brand to a passionate sports audience for a fantastic event!

"Unibet look forward to being the place to be for all the live and pre-match odds on the world's top players when they take to the oche in Belgium."

Won by Phil Taylor for the first four years after its inception in 2008, Simon Whitlock and Adrian Lewis then won the title in 2012 and 2013 respectively before Michael van Gerwen landed a nine-dart finish on his way to victory in last year's event.

The tournament features the leading 16 players from the PDC Order of Merit competing alongside eight qualifiers from the PDC ProTour Order of Merit, seven European qualifiers and one Scandinavian qualifier.

"The Unibet European Championship has grown in stature over the past seven years to become one of the most prestigious titles in our sport," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"Last year's European Championship was a memorable tournament which featured many fantastic matches, a stunning nine-darter and some fantastic crowds in Germany.

"The move to the Ethias Arena in Belgium will add an extra dimension to this tournament in a country where darts is thriving now, both following the emergence of Kim and Ronny Huybrechts and the young talent which is coming through on the PDC circuit."
