KIRK Shepherd and Colin Fowler picked up wins on the opening day of the 2015 PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour season in a double-header at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Saturday.
Former World Championship runner-up Shepherd saw off Jack Tweddell in the first event of the day, while Fowler sealed his fourth Challenge Tour title by beating Steve Maish.
Shepherd’s route to a first PDC title began in comprehensive fashion as he saw off Dean Forde 5-1 in his first game of the day.
A 5-3 win against James Bevan followed before Shepherd then narrowly defeated Fowler 5-4 in a deciding leg to win his board.
The 28-year-old then defeated Richard Elms (5-2) and former World Youth Champion James Hubbard (5-3) to make his way into the quarter-finals where he would he then defeat an in-form Richard Corner 5-2.
A mightily impressive 5-0 whitewash win for Shepherd against Jon Jukes saw the Ramsgate-born thrower into the last two, where he would come up against youngster Jack Tweddell, who was appearing in his first PDC final.
After Shepherd held to take the first leg, both players struggled dramatically with the darts as he next six legs went against the throw and Shepherd moved 4-3 in front.
But the Karate Kid would hold his nerve when it mattered as he held throw and took out 52 to take the £2,000 winner’s cheque.
In the second event of the day, Fowler opened up in similarly impressive fashion to Shepherd as he defeated John Goldie (5-1), Jamie Guilfoyle (5-2) and Matt Goldie (5-3) to win his board.
The 52-year-old would be made to work hard for his place in the final though as he was taken the distance in three of his next four matches in Wigan.
A 5-4 victory over impressive youngster Shaun Griffiths came first before Fowler then defeated Ryan Searle 5-2 and then secured back-to-back deciding leg victories against Antony Hayman and Richard Calvert to book his place in the final against Maish.
The Essex-born thrower had enjoyed a great afternoon at the oche, winning through a very tricky draw to reach in the last two, but struggled to maintain his form in the final against Fowler.
After the pair swapped blows in the opening four legs, Fowler secured the first break of the game as he expertly took out 104 to move 3-2 in front.
And the impressive checkout would prove decisive as a visibly frustrated Maish faltered in the final legs and Fowler ran out a comfortable 5-2 victor to maintain his strong form on the Challenge Tour, having finished third in the final Order of Merit last year.
