Diogo Portela has opened up on a nightmare 2020 after claiming his first ever win at the William Hill World Darts Championship on Tuesday.
Portela broke down in tears after whitewashing Steve Beaton 3-0 to claim his first win on the Alexandra Palace stage at the fourth attempt.
Following his victory, the Brazilian revealed the adversity he faced this year in his personal life, which saw his daughter fight illness, while both he and his wife battled depression.
"To win at Ally Pally would be special any year, but this year was even more special," said Portela.
"I've been to some really dark places this year. What I've been through this year I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
"I was thinking about quitting darts and even killing myself.
"To overcome that and win on the stage after just two or three months, what can I say?
"This was a win for myself to prove how strong I am.
"I was very nervous at the end of the match when I started to think about winning on stage for the first time. I'm very happy to get over the line against a class player like Steve."
Portela will meet Premier League champion Glen Durrant today (Wednesday) as the tournament continues with two sessions of first and second round action.
Global coverage of the tournament is headlined on the dedicated Sky Sports Darts channel, while the PDC's international broadcast partners will include RTL7 in the Netherlands, DAZN in various territories, Fox Sports in Australia, Sky Sport in New Zealand, PDCTV for Rest of the World Subscribers and at matchroom.live.
