Damon Heta is ready to a make a name for himself at the William Hill World Darts Championship by causing a seismic shock at Alexandra Palace on Tuesday.
The Australian ace takes on world number two Peter Wright, following a comfortable second success against Luke Woodhouse that saw him reach the last 32 for the first time.
Heta himself suffered a surprise first round defeat at the hands of USA’s Danny Baggish at Ally Pally last year, but feels better prepared for his best ever run at the sport’s showpiece event.
“Last year was a big learning curve for me,” admitted Heta.
“I was playing well up to the World Championship and I put too much expectation on myself and I didn’t turn up.
“I’ve done well this year too and I was happy to get the win in the first round. That was my priority and I’m glad to have achieved that but I want more now.
“I’m always hard on myself. It’s hard not to try too hard. I need to let that go, relax and play well.
“I’ve gone one step further this year in most tournaments. I’ve stayed in the top 16 on the ProTour the whole time, which is a massive thing as it qualifies you for everything.
“I always want to take that next step in the TV events. I’m still developing as a player. I work harder than most. I’m here for darts and I can’t see myself dropping off too badly.
“I have got every chance against Peter. It’s all on the day. It’s irrelevant how well either of us played in the last match as anything can happen.”
Former Brisbane Darts Masters champion Heta has travelled the globe from Perth and based himself in England in pursuit of his darting dream.
The 34-year-old has had plenty of success too, picking up a ranking title in 2020 and moving into the world’s top 32 this year.
“It’s hard not seeing my family and friends and wondering when I will next be able to get home to see them,” added Heta.
“I’ve made a huge sacrifice and I am determined to make it worthwhile.”
Wright versus Heta is one of three matches taking place on Tuesday evening.
