The Professional Darts Corporation is saddened to learn that Dutch star Toon Greebe has passed away.
The 35-year-old from Den Bosch was a popular figure on the circuit, enjoying two spells on the PDC ProTour before his career was sadly curtailed by ill health.
Greebe initially joined the PDC ranks as a highly-rated teenager, after landing two nine-darters on his domestic circuit and reaching the Dutch Open quarter-finals in 2007.
He made a promising start to his PDC career and qualified for the World Darts Championship in 2008 and 2010, losing to Peter Manley and three-time World Champion John Part in his respective Alexandra Palace appearances.
Greebe, also a two-time UK Open qualifier, made his European Championship debut against Phil Taylor in 2009 following the most successful year of his career, which saw him make two Players Championship quarter-finals.
He also defeated his close friend Michael van Gerwen to reach the last 16 of a ProTour event in January 2012, before choosing to step away from the professional circuit in 2014.
Greebe endured well-documented health issues over recent years, which tragically resulted in him undergoing an amputation on both his right foot and left leg.
The Dutchman was rushed to hospital in 2017 with a severe infection that led to his right foot being amputated, but he remarkably returned to the winner's circle at the WDF Polish Open in 2019.
Greebe also reached the Final Stage of PDC Qualifying School in January 2020, although in October 2022, he underwent a second amputation, this time on the lower part of his left leg.
The sad news of his passing was confirmed on Monday afternoon, and the PDC sends its condolences to the family and friends of Toon at this difficult time.
