Scutt & Merkx seal Winmau Challenge Tour wins in Milton Keynes

Connor Scutt (PDC)

Connor Scutt moved top of the Winmau Challenge Tour Order of Merit after securing his second title of 2024 on Friday, as Dutchman Alexander Merkx also joined the winner's circle in Milton Keynes.

Merkx made his mark with Event 16 success at the Marshall Arena, running out a 5-3 winner against his compatriot Wesley Plaisier to secure a maiden Challenge Tour crown.

Having recovered from 4-3 down to defeat Italy's Gabriel Rollo in round one, Merkx swept aside Lewis Pride and Coni Singh Nagi before whitewashing Poland's Sebastian Bialecki to book his place in the quarter-finals.

The 30-year-old maintained his serene progress with a convincing 5-2 win against Martin Grearson in the last eight, and he set up his showdown against Plaisier with a deciding-leg win over Carl Wilson in the semi-finals.

Plaisier - a back-to-back finalist on the PDC ProTour in July - won the year's previous Challenge Tour event back in June, and he progressed to a third final of 2024 with wins over the likes of Greg Ritchie, Ashley Coleman and Franz Roetzsch.

Friday's second event saw Scutt take centre stage, as the former PDC Tour Card Holder wrapped up a 5-3 win against Tom Sykes to claim his second Challenge Tour title of 2024.

Scutt - an Event 13 winner in June - kicked off his campaign with a 5-1 demolition of German star Rene Eidams, and he later accounted for 2021 World Youth Champion Ted Evetts in advancing to the last 16.

The 28-year-old also dismantled former World Championship quarter-finalist Darius Labanauskas in the quarter-finals, before averaging 101 in his 5-3 success against Wilson in the last four.

Sykes performed superbly in his run to the Event 17 showpiece, dumping out Jimmy van Schie, Kai Fan Leung, Bradley Brooks and Dominik Gruellich to pocket the £1,000 runner-up prize.

Van Schie produced the performance of the afternoon in Event 16, averaging 108.85 in a stunning second round success over Nick Fullwell, which he backed up with another ton-plus average in a whitewash win against Jarred Cole.

Wilson also impressed with back-to-back semi-final showings, claiming the scalps of Andy Boulton, Michael Unterbuchner, Gruellich, Eidams, Steve Hine and Ciaran Teehan across the respective events.

The 2024 Winmau Challenge Tour resumes on Saturday August 17, as the year's fourth weekend of action continues with another double-header at the Marshall Arena.

The top two players from the final 2024 Challenge Tour Order of Merit will secure a PDC Tour Card for 2025/26 and a place in the 2024/25 Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

Scutt currently occupies top spot on £8,250, ahead of Dutch trio Danny Jansen, Plaisier and Christian Kist, with Scottish stars Andy Boulton and John Henderson further adrift in fifth and sixth positions.
