JAMES WADE is on course for a second successive Blue Square Regional Final victory, after being one of the eight players to progress to Day Two in the Midlands.
Wade was victorious in Manchester a fortnight ago, defeating Terry Jenkins in the final, and pipped Peter Manley 5-4 in his final game on Saturday to reach the quarter-finals.
Mervyn King reached the last eight for the second time in three events, winning six matches on the day after beginning in the Preliminary Round.
He followed up 4-1 wins over Paul Whitworth and Stephen Leek with victories against Kevin Painter, Adrian Lewis and Dave Smith before whitewashing Mark Lawrence 5-0 in the decider.
Lawrence had earlier knocked out practice partner Dennis Priestley and Tony Eccles on his way to the last 16.
Barrie Bates took out a 156 finish in the final leg of his decider to knock out Adrian Gray and book his place in the quarter-finals.
Newcastle-born youngster Kevin McDine reached his first quarter-final with a 5-2 win over Alan Warriner-Little in his final game, having previously ended Dave Askew's hopes by the same scoreline.
Jimmy Mann, who won the Midlands Regional Final two years ago, remained on course for another title with a 5-4 win over Chris Hook in his final match.
Wayne Mardle reached the last eight for the third successive Regional Final with a 5-4 win over in-form Andy Smith - who almost hit a nine-darter earlier in the day.
Steve Hine followed up his run to the semi-finals of the Regional Final in Manchester a fortnight ago by avenging his last four defeat to Terry Jenkins with a 5-3 win at The Asterdale.
