Classic Matches: van Gerwen v Taylor

AS the Betway Premier League's top two players prepare to face off in Glasgow on Thursday, we revisit some of the classic encounters between Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor.

The clash has been billed by many as seeing the sport's greatest player at the moment taking on the greatest ever - but the pair have developed a fine rivalry over the past decade, including some memorable contests.

Taylor had to produce one of the most impressive comebacks of his career to finally see off a 23-year-old van Gerwen in the 2013 World Championship final.

The Dutch wonderkid raced in to a 4-2 lead in sets before Taylor - perhaps inspired by the presence of the new SId Waddell Trophy on the Alexandra Palace stage - powered his way to a 16th World Championship title with a 7-4 victory.

2014 World Matchplay Final

Taylor has established himself as he king of the Winter Gardens across two decades of success in Blackpool, and he claimed his 15th World Matchplay title in 2014 with a commanding victory over van Gerwen, who was appearing in his first final in the event.

Taylor raced into an early 7-1 lead and never looked back claiming an 18-9 win and his seventh successive World Matchplay win, which also left his rival in tears after coming so close to the prestigious title.
