DENIS OVENS overcame a dose of double trouble to come from a set down to defeat Geoff Wylie 3-1 in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Ovens had a host of chances to take the opening set against the Northern Ireland qualifier, allowing a 2-1 lead to slip as he went behind.

The number nine seed's woes continues as Wylie took a 2-1 lead in the second set, before he battled back to land double ten to level matters and land a 64 checkout to take the set.

The Hertfordshire star hit a 120 finish to open the third set, and maximum 180's in successive legs helped him into a 2-1 lead in the match.

He then completed victory by taking three straight legs and set up a second round clash with Steve Alker.

"I made it difficult for myself," admitted Ovens. "I wasn't in the game for the first two sets and was lucky enough to get it back to 1-1.

"I played a little bit better then, but I've known Geoff for a long time and I'm happy to get past him."

Ovens took a week away from his job as a builder to prepare for the tournament, and he added: "It's cost me a fortune but it has paid off so far!

"My preparation has been good, I've been playing with Chris Mason but it didn't quite happen today.

"I know I can play better and I had a bit of luck today, I'm through and who knows, this may be my year!"
