Eastbourne Delight For Bates

BARRIE BATES whitewashed Gary Welding 5-0 to win Sunday's John Smiths Open Singles in Eastbourne.

The Welshman averaged over 90 in the match to claim the title at the Winter Gardens, having also seen off Wayne Mardle in the semis.

Welding edged out Kevin Painter in their last four clash, while Shayne Burgess, Michael Barnard, Peter Allen and Geoff Harkup made the quarter-finals.
