STEVE BEATON came from a set down to defeat Gary Welding 3-1 and move into the last eight of the Sky Bet World Grand Prix for the second successive year.
Welding was hoping to reach the quarter-finals for the second time in his career, having come through the field 12 months ago.
But the qualifier from St Helens suffered double trouble after edging the first set against Beaton 3-2.
He failed to win a leg in the next set as Beaton hit back to level the game, and allowed a 1-0 lead to slip in the next.
Beaton sensed victory and upped his game in the fourth set, landing his only maximum 180 of the match on his way to wrapping up the win.
"I'm over the moon to get through," admitted Beaton. "I've not had a great deal of success in recent years but a good run this week would be a big confidence boost."
Welding said: "I've played a lot better than that but Steve took his chances and I didn't."
