John Magowan 3-1 Peter Manley (3-2, 3-0, 0-3, 3-0)
Sky Bet World Grand Prix Second Round
NORTHERN IRISH qualifier John Magowan dumped number six seed Peter Manley out of the Sky Bet World Grand Prix with a superb 3-1 win.
Magowan was one of four players to come through from over 400 who entered the All-Ireland Qualifiers for the tournament, but has now reached the last eight.
He overcame Alan Caves in the first round, and stunned former semi-finalist Manley with an inspired display.
The win, though, means that Magowan faces a dash to reach the Citywest Hotel in time for his quarter-final on Friday night - with son Peter getting married 60 miles away near Cavan during the afternoon.
"The organisers have said they may have to bring me in the hotel's helicopter because I might not make it back in time due to the traffic," said Magowan.
"But I'm just so pleased to be in the last eight. I wasn't the favourite but I played well.
"I lost the first leg but knew I'd practised well and, in most sports, you generally play well if you practice well."
After going 2-1 down inside the first set, Magowan reeled off five successive legs - including finishes of 85 and 103 - to take a two-set lead.
Manley hit back with three successive legs to pull back the third set, but Magowan regained his composure to hit back and win the fourth to progress.
Manley said afterwards: "I didn't take John lightly and everyone knows how he plays, but I went 2-1 up in the first set and instead of me beating him I was waiting for him to make a mistake."
