Mardle Punishes Clarys

WAYNE MARDLE 4-1 ERIK CLARYS
(2-3, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-1)

WAYNE MARDLE came back from a set down to soar into the third round of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship with a 4-1 defeat of Erik Clarys.

Mardle threatened to be the latest big-name casualty of the tournament when he lost the first set to his Belgian opponent.

But he responded in style to take nine successive legs and move into the last 16.

The Romford thrower, ranked fifth in the world, had chances to win the first set but paid for his missed doubles as Clarys hit back to land double eight.

Mardle hit back to win the next three sets without reply, punishing his opponents' erratic darts with some fine finishes, including checkouts of 94 and 109.

While Clarys hit back to win the opening leg of the fifth set, Mardle hit a 105 finish to move ahead in the set and checked out 64 to seal the win.

"It wasn't good, but it was a win," said Mardle. "I'm still in the hunt to be World CHampion and there's a long way to go but I've still got a shot.

"I should have won the first set and after I didn't I kicked on and even though Erik wasn't at his best I showed some authority."
